NITRO C-1 Visual Carbon Hull by DJR Ltd

So at DJR we have been pretty busy working on something new to show you all.

This is the NITRO C-1 model in full visual carbon. We will be launching an F-1 fibreglass model in a few months time.

We are just concluding our testing phase of the prototype and working on some more videos, but here's some to wet your appetite (they are also on our facebook and instagram page).


The ski is running a DASA 1200 ninja motor in these videos.

Our hull has a load of unique features and has been designed from the ground up with masters for every part cut on CNC from our designs helping us get them sharp lines and a truly symmetrical hull!

What does it ride like? We wanted to create a super capable flat water hull, that was still predictable, easy to ride but not super short. It has a comfortable riding stance, without an overly-wide top deck, keeping it nimble but controllable. The position of your footholds can be adjusted to fine tune the balance point on the ski, keeping the rider right in the centre. You can really feel this mid air with how flickable and in control of the ski you feel!

The 'dots' on the underneath side are an optional feature of inserts which will allow the rider to later add full or partial length sponsons to the hull, adapting it for surf, boat chasing or anything you fancy!

The ski is made 100% in house. All of the pictures you see are of the prototype. It is not the finished article by any means but we are very proud of it nonetheless! Keep an eye on our media feeds for peeks into the quality of the finished parts for production units.

Just a personal note:

This is my own personal creation. I have been riding standup skis for 13 years, and during the process have ridden almost every standup ski out there. There is so much out there that is awesome, but I wanted to go in a slightly different direction and here it is.

I have been planning the creation of this ski in my head for over 5 years and before we even started to design it, I set my goals of what I wanted to see in the finished product. I can now look back and say everything I wanted to do during the process, we made a reality. Of course it has taken an incredible amount of time and effort from several people behind the scenes here at DJR, from design, CNC work, advanced composites ….. The amount of work that has gone into it it too much to put down in words so please, ask away with any questions.

In my own opinion, I have tried to create a ski that is the best for our sport, in every aspect. But that is for you guys to decide!

We welcome absolutely anyone that wants to come over and try it! We have already had some successful test rides resulting in names on the list!

And finally, let us know what you think of the look!

This is just the tip of the iceberg! We have been beating up the prototype, testing, tweaking and changing things for months now, ready for our production units. You guys getting these are in for a treat!

I have seen and briefly ridden this ski, the engineering and finish of this ski is second to none, I am very pleased to say I placed my name on the order list (near The top i hope) straight away.

The phrase "game changer" gets thrown about frequently, but i honestly believe this machine is just that

That hull really does look like something else! If the build and ride quality is somewhere near, what the pictures tell - its a winner!
I think i might have to book a flight to the UK to see and test ride that beauti!
To be honest, thoese stealth looking lines and angles looks so ridicules awesome, deffently Top 3 of my favourite looking hulls, and properly nr 1!

I'm working on photos of everything for the website so you can see inside and out of every part. With the prototype we have played around with positions of everything inside and out but we are now standardised on setup for production units moving forwards now its all how we want it.

As for the carbon, to get the visual finish without clear coat or gel the layup, infusion and lamination needs to be perfect so there's no hiding anything! its difficult but well worth it in the end. I'll keep uploading pics but keep an eye on the website.

The hull pictured here has no clear/gel ? Is it polished resin ? What material/materials are you using for inserts, cooling lines, exhaust tube scupper line, etc. ?
 
The last 3 pictures I just posted of the top deck out of the mould has no clear coat or gel. That was as soon as I took it out the mould on Sunday night. It will later be polished once it is all assembled and before delivery. Gel coat or clear coat has always been problematic on freestyle skis as it has a different flex rate to the carbon so eventually it will start to lift, crack and peel off. Also most gel or clear coats are not as hard a finish as the resin.
Typically with composites a part will come out of the mould matt, and then clear coat is added to make it glossy and look good. The way we have done it eliminates that step. There is no additional weight to add with gel or clear (more than you'd think) and this will stand the test of time as there is not an external 'skin' to continually flex.
So yes to answer your question what you see is the epoxy resin itself :)
All of the inserts for the hull are custom made for us from aluminium and then anodised (fixing points in the engine bay are Thrust UFO). The tow points (1 front, 2 rear) are stainless steel. All of the tubing in the hull is full carbon (we used aluminium for the cooling hoses in the prototype but moving forward they are all carbon).

Have you guys had one in use and out in the sun long enough to see if the carbon browns from UV exposure? From what I understand most companies post clear their product for UV protection and overall longevity of the natural carbon color. My personal ski has a UV resistant in-mold clear.

We have looked into this extensively before we began. Our prototype has been out in the sun almost all day, every day of summer (one of the hottest summers on record here) to give it more than a lifetimes sun exposure, with absolutely no discolouring.

Everything we are making is post cured which is important to keep the resin stable to withstand high temperature and UV. The resin we are using also has a high level of built in UV resistance and is designed for making parts in this way :)

In my opinion UV gel or clear coat is more likely to lift from your carbon at some point during intense heat/sun or prolonged UV exposure which I have seen on quite a few hulls, way before your carbon would discolour if its been made the way we are doing it.

I'm not saying at all that putting gel or clear is wrong, there are some great manufacturers making fantastic hulls this way. Just explaining how we came about making our parts in this way and explaining why it works :)

Also on a final note that extra weight we are saving from no gel or clear coat gives you that little bit of extra carbon and resin for like for like weight.

Excellent! I am in total agreement on the resin vs clear vs gel. Solid surface is always the way to go for longevity. I also like the lines/tubes will be carbon. The one miss I think is aluminium inserts. It doesn't matter what coating or treatment you put on aluminum, with carbon its not a matter of if it will corrode, but when. Have you considered naval brass or stainless? Curious as to whether or not you've givin this thing a salt water dunk yet?
