Surfriding Why do people ride with out chin pads?

You have no idea what cold is....no you don't. I was riding this week Monday here in Wisco, 34 degree water(lake froze yesterday) 43 air temps. (wetsuit)

As for the surf, yes it's very clean. I rode Oceanside last January, you guys are spoiled!

I wasn't discounting the your cold factor i was just saying in cali the ocean temp ranges from 49-60 all year it never gets warm warm if you go to northern cali it never gets past 55 and goes in the low 40's all year, i dont know how you guys have fun riding in that cold of water..........yikes!!!!!! and yes we are spoiled but we pay for it...homes prices, gas, taxes, crazy gun laws and every traffic law you can imagine and no 2 strokes on fresh water lakes.

IMO, even a full face MX leaves you vulnerable to a nose job.
That said, I prefer the look of a chinpad. It makes it look more complete. But not really needed.
Also, we are all tweeking something all of the time, so, every ride is a water test.

Not that a chinpad would help, but I've severely whacked my knee a few times. Out of commission for an entire season because of that b4.
It hasn't happened at all after shortening the pole.

You guys definitely pay out the azz to have that surf! I moved to Florida 3 years ago from New Hampshire. Our surf leaves a lot to be desired but when weighing out the pros and cons I wouldn't want to be anywhere else.

There are times, usually when a sweet vid is posted by California riders, that I just wanna hitch-up and start driving there.
We can wait years for surf that they get on a regular basis.
Then I calm down and feel lucky to have great riding very close.

The entire population can't live on the coast.
I guess that's what makes some of the events special.

I think it's because when riding surf you are in shallower water often. When you fall off the ski can get rolled hitting the bottom. I've wondered the same thing. That's why they have bars with pads so it hits the bottom and protects the ski when rolling in the surf. Wouldn't feel too good to hit with your face though.

In the great lakes our best wave days are the days west coasters stay home for. 7 second intervals is like once a few years, lol. It is fun though.

I haven't run a chinpad in years and I can't really give a reason other than ripping up stock sn poles, breaking sh**, and getting tired of taking it off and on. I do always run foam around my crossbar though to save my thighs and stomach!

Im not really in to big air and being inverted anyways. Just like to slash, slide, carve and do it fast

Weight savings especially in combination with my wooden steering stop (made out of firewood after 2 seasons had to be upgraded with a layer of duct tape). Gets me closer to the weight of a carbon ski and the FW backflip....

Jokes aside after almost breaking my steering cable while doing hood tricks I decided its worth the effort to get some duct tape and modify the stock chin pad.
I would have gotten one earlier but as already said for ~300 euros I can get 2 steering cables everything else is covered by health insurance...still running my wooden steering stop though.

But I will say that I've ripped off stock SJ pads during barrel rolls, kept riding, and bumped me nuggin, where it flapped and bled. Lost my RRP pad on my RRP pole on one sxr..... Yeah, shouldn't have kept riding. Ouchie.
