Why is Cannondale so weird/stupid?

My bike was built with almost all new stuff, except the wheels. And it turns out they have Cannondale Fire hubs. The freehub is grabbing so I decided to pull it off, clean it out, grease, and put it back on. Well, Cannondale in their quest to be 'different' used an 11mm Allen on it. Not the very common 8mm or less common 10mm or rare 12mm, but the unobtainable 11mm.

I'm going to try to use an 11mm bolt to get it off, otherwise I'll just ditch the rims.

Related to this, I bought a set of wheels with less than 100miles on them that were new takeoffs for $77 shipped and they should be here Monday. They will probably be my road tire set so I can just swap out and get some miles in.

Well, since I pretty much decided these are junk wheels anyway, I messed around and lo and behold, a 3/8" extension fits right in there and it came off. Now to figure out how to get the freehub apart without destroying it.

BTW, Cannondale also used 26 ball bearings instead of the normal 18.

I'm waiting for my rims to show up to build a wheelset now. Unfortunately Velocity won't send my LBS a tracking number so I'll know when I can build it.

I got it all back together---repacked the bearings and cleaned out the freehub and regreased it. The freehub is just messed up, so I might try to buy a new one to keep the rims for road use or who knows.

grrr, about 2.5 hours of work for zero improvement.

My new wheels didn't show up yet so had to ride yesterday with the old. I swapped bikes with one guy for a minute on the trail and WOW did that show how badly mine rolls. We swapped again in the parking lot for a minute and it blows me away the difference. When you only ride one bike and that's your 'normal', sometimes you don't realize what it should be like.

I bet I'm doing 50% more work than I should be.

I totally agree and was very surprised to see that too. my old wheels felt squishy and less responsive.

properly build and good quality parts is all the difference in the world. I loaned a friend my Mavic Crossrides, these are good wheels, but they are the bottom of the Aftermarket Mavic wheelsets. He has a Stumpjumper FS with decent Spesh. Spec wheels, but he had been complaining about them. Told him to try my backups. Before there were sections where I would just coast and roll through and leave him behind. Now, he can coast and stay pretty much with me.

Did not know that . Most people don't know it , but he was the inventor / maker of sealed hubs , bottom brackets . I still have a tube of his grease from the late 80's that I occasionally find and use from time to time .

someone was telling me he got the sealed bearing idea from water pumps. I can't afford phill wood hubs but I do buy hubs with sealed bearings.
