650sx Ignition Questions

Hey guys, new member, 88 650sx owner:

Having ignition issues, to start:

-Fully charged battery
-Replaced coil (ebay), original coil ruptured on backside, went from weak spark to no spark.
-Found damaged exciter wire (red/black), repaired
-35v during cranking coming from exciter wire after repair
-Kill switch/stop switch tested in perfect working order

Questions:

-what's the normal voltage reading at the exciter wire during cranking
-I was told that the triggering of the ignition is done through the cdi, but what gives it the signal to trigger?
-Does the exciter both create the ignition voltage for spark and trigger? If so, being that there are 4 magnets, what is it looking at for timing?
-are ebay coils iffy? Any recommendations for a great aftermarket coil?

I have been having trouble finding this information and it would help make a more informed diagnosis. Thanks for all of your help!

I found the newer manual earlier. This one isn't correct to my year. The motor is the same, but the electronics are different. I've got a 4 wire cdi, this shows a three. They are similar. However, it still doesn't answer my questions on how it all works. Say the exciter is acting as the trigger signal, how does a 1.5" copper winding know difference between 10deg btdc or 18deg btdc?
