ebox to engine ground...

On a 1994 Superjet...
What provides the ground from the ebox to the engine? Is it the thermo switch? I had lost my ground, but solved it with an extra, external gound wire from the ebox to the engine. But I am curious which wire is supposed to provide the ground.
Thx!

the ground is to the stator, it's completely retarded.

Correct, the E box ground goes from the ebox through the black wire loom with the other wires to the stator and has an eyelet at the end and screwed to the backside of stator, thus the stator mounted to the cases and the cases grounded by the starter and the main ground cable off the starter back to the battery.

Is it ok to stick with the extra, external ebox to engine ground that I set up? Is there any downside? I've checked and sanded the ebox connections and they seem fine, the problem must be at the stator. If I can safely avoid that repair I'd just assume do so.
Thanks!

A ground is a ground as long as you have a low resistance path from ebox to battery ground.
