I want to try racing

Hey guys, I been riding at a buoy course for a couple months and want to try to join a real race. The problem is my superjet has footholds and a lot of motor work done.

Is there any races in the southeast that would let me race in a beginner class without having to get an entire new ski?

You dont need to race the beginner class if it's your first time, and with your engine being modified they may place you in whatever class your ski qualifies/passes inspection for.

Why would he race a normal class if he has never done a race before? With no experience I would suggest a beginner class to learn start procedure, race flags and course rules .

Beginner class is stock ski only. Convert the ski back to stock, I know the guy that organizes races down here and he told me you aren't going to be DQ'd for footholds, they don't make you go faster. If you show up with a pipe and other mods, they won't allow you to race beginner unless they have a really small moto and just need to fill spots. You will be put into the class your ski qualifies for otherwise. If scrutineering is a PITA they may not allow you to race at all.

Your taking to a guy with over 20 years experience racing. Crazy know more about racing than 90% of members here.

I raced beginner class for my first race with a pipe on my ski and my buddy had a group k 850. They don’t care in beginners class. It’s not really policed because they want you there racing and learning the rules, starts, flags etc... OP, you’ll be fine. After you get your feet wet so to speak you’ll need to pick a class and follow those class rules.

I remember when I raced my first race in the early summer of 1990 on a Kaw 650SX. I raced the stock class and it was a full line of racers.
On my second moto I came in 4th behind this guy and noticed he had the Ocean Pro Holeshot nozzle which was illegal for stock class(They let him slip by in tech). My Dad talked me into protesting and he was disqualified and with that it gave me a 3rd place trophy overall...lol I also got a 3rd in Freestyle my first time too that day. Was a great 1st race day for me.

Go for it, you wont regret the experience and you may get the race bug and do it more!

Great advice from someone who has never raced, you get back on your meds yet

Share the same feeling as OP, sure wish there was more stand up racing up here in the great white north, specially on the western side.Might be a while before lengthy road trips are "socially acceptable" again.

I sanctioned a few races in South Central AK a few years ago. There was not enough racers to break even on insurance costs. I lost ~$3k on each race after all was said and done. If you have enough riders let me know. I have enough gear to build WFs size race courses in a storage locker now. Hopefully this sport becomes “cool” again. You can race a ski until you are old and not worry to much about permanent injury. Its, boring to watch... but super fun and relatively safe for riders!

Honestly racing is extremely boring. You spend all day waiting to run a two or three motos for 10 minutes each.

This is why Freeride took off. Anyone can show up and ride the course or location whenever they want. Ride, talk to pros, ride, make friends, ride, and party at night. Repeat.

It depends on your personality. I found racing extremely fun, but I'm competitive. Those motos are your chance to see if your practice and perseverance paid off. Very difficult to go around a buoy fast in washing machine water fighting for space, and hard to beat the adrenaline rush of arm to arm, hull to hull racing. If you ride hard and have good competition, those few rides will be more than enough to tire you out.

Just give it a try they aren’t going to make a big deal out of it ! It’s not like there’s any $ in beginner ! Just go have fun ! If you like it and get hooked then build a ski by the rules !
Kick ass !
