Was wondering if anyone has taken this off or knows if this is needed? Took the foam out and just looks like it leads to nothing, wondering if I'm able to take it off and have the motor still run ok

As it looks like it leads to nothing there is a small opening for air, reason it's so small is so it won't take on much water.

I do NOT recommend taking this off. It's not necessarily for cooling the motor, but providing air for the carb. If you're concerned about it taking on water I suggest you install a high flow bilge pump. You can find them almost anywhere lol. I picked up a few from farm and fleet, Walmart etc. They normally go anywhere from $10-$40

I 've seen plenty of people remove that vent. Just like people glass over the front and top hood vents on a square nose superjet. In both cases, if you are covering up an air inlet hole, you'll have to make accommodations to let air in through somewhere else. It's not rocket science....
