This is thread is for info related to the LSFR riding spot and other places near Port Arasnsas. There are several good riding spots in this area with little hassle from police and fisherman. The best rule of thumb in Port a Riding is bring a friend or beach cart, tow chains, and pick a spot far away from surfers and fisherman. This will insure a trouble free riding experience.

Location: Port Aransas beach just south of beach access road 1. Not 1a

Map links: Ride/camping spot, Closest Fuel station, Sand Dollar SURF CAM, PORT A SURF CAM

Camping info:

Camping will be just south of gulf access road 1. See main thread or my signature for directions.
Campers will need an inexpensive annual parking permit.($50 fine if not displayed) This allows camping for up to 3 consecutive nights. You shouldn't need a separate permit for your tow-able camper. Just the tow vehicle. Permits are available at any local gas station or retailer. Camping is permitted anywhere south of access road 1a.

Hotels suggestions:

Sand Dollar city: Close to the ride, on the beach, can accommodate many riders. Has a beach party area and ample parking.

Tropical Island: A little far from the ride in downtown Port A bud a good price, good owner who takes good care of the place. Also has a very hot and clean hot tub(This is coming from a pool guy) Always seems to have a vacancy, RV park too.

Beach launch rules, campfire rules and all the legal stuff:

  • Launch from beach is legal anywhere south of beach access road 1. (Not 1a) I have verified this with county and city police so there is no question on this. See link below for more details.
  • Campfires must be 'contained' and no larger than 3' wide x 3' tall or be by permit. We had small contained fires last year with no hassles by the cops. If someone wants to get a permit, I'll bring a ton of wood.
  • Pit bikes are questionable. They are technically illegal but in the past, we have kept it low key and out of sight until later and have gotten away with it.
  • Riding/launching at the jetty is permitted but you must stay 250 ft from shore and idle out(This is a good spot to catch huge tanker and charter boat wakes)
  • Beach parking permit is $12 for riding area, this includes 3 nights camping. Permit can be obtained at local gas stations and retailers.

Ferry and fuel info: If you are coming down I-37, skip the Ferry. There are huge wait times on Fridays and Saturdays and you only stand to save a few minutes. call this number for wait time and other info (361) 749-2850

FERRY FUEL CAN LIMIT: "More than two portable gasoline cans (six gallons in size) are not allowed aboard the ferry." Better to just grab fuel out there but there is still TWO CAN LIMIT even if empty. There are plenty of fuel stations. Marine fuel may be available at the docks. There is a small airport if you need some high octane, they might sell it there.

Does the gas station down there at Port-A have non-ethanol fuel? I was just planning on filling all my cans here, but sounds like that's a no go.

so are the waves better in the winter? I'm sick of the cold here in Oklahoma, thinking about taking a little trip down there next time its around 70. I would have loved to go this week, but it's going to be cold.
