Got a stupid question for you guys. What makes a mag pump a mag pump?

I was originally looking at the torrent pumps but got an Amazon gift card from work and decided to pick up this Solas YRS-SV-148-74 12 vein 148 pump since it was the only one on Amazon.

It doesn't say "mag pump" but what makes a mag pump a mag pump? Is it a trademark term?

Any pros or cons with this over a torrent or skat?

Was originally planning on a 144 mag with a 10/16 hooker behind a CPT ported 718 with head, B pipe, lightened flywheel, msd enhancer and dual 38s. Would a 10/16 still be an ok prop? Sticking it all in a gen 2 BOB hull.

Can't answer the Mag question but the solas is a 2 piece pump rather the Torrent is on with the wear ring built in. I hear the Torrents can be a pain to remove the prop but i know a few guys who run them and haven't complained. I've got the Solas 148 and am happy with it. I have ran it with a TPE 964 down to a 701 and it was fine.

Your need a 148 solar wear ring also. A 148 - 10/16 would be way over proped. Your need something like a skat-trak 5/14 pitch.

I know a 148 - 6/15 cutback 5mm skat is equivalent to a hooked 11/17-144

Magnum pump is referring to 12 vanes or more.

Mag is a just a name. Like torrent pump. The advantage to skat or torrent is the vane design and the ability to have set back or non. The solas is a stock type pump replacement IMO. Prop selection will be different with each brand especially the solas as there are major differences

I was in this boat a year ago when I rebuilt my ski. The price of the solas definitely caught my eye but I ended up going with the torrent. The customer support was top notch and the quality was amazing best part too made in the USA.
