650/X-2 UMI Steering Stem with OEM Steering base

I scoured the internet searching for an answer and I couldn't find the answer so here goes...

I recently bought what I thought was a complete UMI steering set up for my X2. It came off an old X2 that had been sitting on the side of a house for years, so the steering was tight and doesn't seem to loosen up. I took it apart and cleaned the dirt off and that didn't really do anything. I then realized that it was a UMI steering stem "upper" and an X2 OEM base. Has anyone ever seen this before? If so, is there a way to make it loosen up?

It looks like there are plastic bushings on either end of the OEM base and I'm not sure if those need to be replaced or if I just need to get the UMI base. Seems odd that someone would put a UMI stem on an OEM base... If i need get a UMI base, I don't even know where to go about finding that.

Also, I don't have the clamps for the bars and bought some off eBay that said it would work with UMI steering and bars but I guess the bars are too big around and there is too much space between the base and where the clamp meets so the screws won't reach the clamp. Does anyone know where to buy the clamps?

Its really dirty as well from sitting in the weather, does anyone know what'll get it clean and shiny again?

Any help is appreciated.

Take it apart, clean it with solvent or degreaser, grease, reassemble. That may be a umi upper made for a oem stem. The upper part is the weak point on the stock setup.

Thanks for your reply. Any particular degreaser or grease type? It may be an upper made for an OEM stem, I just haven't ever heard of that. Once cleaned, will it function as its supposed to?

Should, probably all gummed up. If it's real nasty, I would start with brake clean spray, then move to simple green degreaser, then use a marine grade grease for assembly.

I got ahold of the guy that I bought the steering stem from and told him something didn't seem right and he had what looked like the UMI base in a box of parts. I got it from him but it still doesn't seem right. The way the slots are directed and how it is angled makes it look like it could be a top stop base. The stop slots are facing front and back when I line up the angle towards the ride. Can anyone tell by looking at it if its the right piece or if its a top stop piece?

The notches go down, those are steering stops. Looks like it could use new bearings

Yeah, it needs new bearings without a doubt. The part I was talking about was the notches are going towards the front and back of the ski, rather than the right and left, like in the OEM currently. Is this correct?
