just ordered the new giro cipher mtb helmet, my old giro fell apart after 2 years of use. not too bad for a 50$ craigslist purchase. the brackets that the chin straps mount to are made of steel and they fully rusted out so my helmet flew off when i got rolled over on a barrel ride.

SNELL ratings mean a lot more than DOT. Any serious motor sports organization that checks helmets is looking for a current SNELL rating and could care less about what the DOT thinks.
I've been using an old Thor MX helmet I got off ebay 5 years ago for like $50 or less. All the pads come out so I can clean them. My only issue was the steel rivets for the chin straps rusted out, so I replaced them with stainless screws and nuts. Yes it's heavy, but fits my face tightly and I've not had any head injuries wearing it, though there are a few times I hit my head so hard on the ski while wearing the helmet that I may not be here anymore if I wasn't wearing it...
Well they both meet DOT and ECE standards which is a lot more stringent than just wearing a helmet made for Kayaks and Bicycles. Same with the Thor MX helmets I have reviewed (not snell approved, but DOT and ECE).

what is the ASTM F1952 safety standard (Giro)? You guys are starting to make me regret buying the cipher....lol
It's a standard for mountain bike helmets. Many have been perfectly fine with using MTB helmets......but, maybe that helmet designed around a heavier machine and higher speed accidents might be better insurance and money well spent, who knows. I hate paying for auto insurance, until I get an accident......then I'm glad I have it. All in what ever you are comfortable with.

the company overnighted my helmet and i got it today. Super impressed. One question for those of you who ride in the winter. So this came with a cloth face shield, obviously to keep the dirt and dust out of mountain bikers faces. However, it looks like it could be used to keep your face slightly warmer in freezing conditions like we do with bandanas when we go snowboarding. Anyone try this?

Jettribe if you can find one. I ended up finding one in Russia. JT hooked me up with dealer. He flys in for events and was kind enough to bring. Only helmet actually made for water that I know of. I love it!
I am about to quit wearing one if I can't find something low profile that doesn't jerk my head back on big failed rolls.
I can go in upside down from 15' with out a helmet on and no worries.....but God forbid I am not tucked perfectly with my 661 on.....BAM...stinger! (Arm and hand go numb for a minute) A few of those a season add up!

Are you riding with the visor? I've experienced the same but usually 1 or 2 tears the visor off and then it doesn't happen.
