Surfriding Rn hood lip ideas?

I want to have a hood lip on my RN so the hood won't shift side to side on bad landings. I know 227 has an amazing version where he did it with fiberglass and it looks great. But i would rather just bolt something on instead and maybe do the full job during winter. So i was thinking maybe a piece of hard plastic about 1 inch tall, 1 inch wide, 6 inches long. Then drill half inch in and put 3 bolts through the lip to created the raised area. This would be done on both sides. I have a diablo waterdawg hood with a watcon seal. I use a ratchet strap as well. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Good idea , talk to Jetmaniac he's been kicking the idea of a hood retainer kit for a bit an may have a proto version.

How about a composite L bracket attached under the seal. Hard to explain I'll post a pic tonight. Fyi xft hoods do exactly that.

I use a material from Farco plastics that would be excellent for this, it is thermoformable so you could actually heat it with a heat gun and bend the curves into it, it also holds a screw like no tomorrow. Farco calls it expanded PVC and it comes in fairly large sheets, it can be glued with epoxy and accepts laminations very well. I use it to remake rub rails on sit down hulls when they bust them off, used as a core material a couple of layers of cloth on both sides makes a very strong component.

A hood strap holds your hood on but after a big landing gone bad, it doesn't really prevent it from shifting sideways and allowing water in your engine comp, so here's what I did. I originally made a hood seal lip out of Hydro turf but a few short landings from 15' up made short order of that set up.

I also noticed cracks forming around the hood seal lip that I knew where only going to get worse. I wanted to reinforce that area, so I then decided to make the hood retainer lip a little more permanent. I glassed in the area under the hood seal lip completely around the entire engine compartment and then formed the hood retainer lip all out of glass. Mines probably a little over kill but the set up is pretty much bullet proof. It does add a lot of weight so I only recommend it for surf boats that need maximum strength.

We also made a simple version out of a angled piece of Aluminum that could just be bolted on, which works well and a friend of mine is running one of those now. The main disadvantage is that an Aluminum bolt on doesn't really beef up your hood seal lip. For weight conscious riders the Aluminum angle is probably the way to go but for surf riders, especially West Coast were the surf is large, then I would recommend the glassed on lip and hood seal reinforcement.

Has anyone made a hood /hull bracket yet to keep the hood from shifting.
I am thinking about doing this mod but I dont want to add any weight.

I think you could do what 227 did and not add much weight..... Do like we talked about and use carbon tape. I'll be making an order shortly.

DSCF3625.jpgrun the ratchet strap thru an eye instead of just a groove or nothing. that way the hood cant shift too far. wont keep it from moving but if you land on the side , your bell probably got rung anyway and a quick break to check the hood and chase the stars away. couch seat strap hardware is what i use.
