Used Superjet Pricing

Alright I don't want this to turn into a huge argument. I just want to start a discussion and hear some people's opinions on the value of a used superjet.

In light of 3 recent superjet ads:

My ad: http://www.x-h2o.com/threads/15706

01Jet's ad: http://www.x-h2o.com/threads/15127

Supermullet's ad: http://www.x-h2o.com/threads/15733

I have realized that most people think all used superjets are worth $3500-4500 regardless of mods or condition. I mean I've seen people come on here and say I got a used roundnose with a bpipe for $3000 and everyone says thats an amazing deal. 9 times out of 10 though that ski is usually pretty beat up and it doesn't have a lot of other mods most people are going to buy like a good prop, UMI steering. footholds, girdled head, ya know the expensive ones beside a bpipe.

Now I realize you never get out of a ski what you have in it(That would make superjets investments:haha: ) so when I thought about selling my ski I figured out exactly what I had into it and decided based on my situation I wouldn't take any less than $500 below what I had in my ski. The numbers I came up with were that I had $6000 in the ski and that I wouldn't take a penny less than $5500. After receiving a few very respectful PM's I realized I would probably not get that price on this website. Thats when I decided to pursue other means to raising the money for the engagement ring I am about to purchase.

I thought about it some more and thought to myself if I were to buy a brand new superjet (which is basically almost what my ski is) and I were to purchase all of the same brand new aftermarket parts that I purchased that I would have $6500 into the ski and $2500-3000 in mods. So in the end if I wanted a brand new ski with brand new parts I would have to pay $9000-9500 which is absolutely crazy. Personally I would never spend that much to have a brand new stock hull superjet. I then thought to myself what would an almost brand new used superjet with all/most of the aftermarket parts I wanted on it be worth to me? That's when I realized I would rather spend $5500-6000 on an absolutely mint ski with many mods than pay $4000 on a beat up ski with a few mods. Thats just me though. Most people will sacrifice condition for price which is fine with me.

I guess what I am trying to say after this very long post is before many of you say a ski is only worth 3500-4500 take a look at what most 3500-4500 ski's look like and then take a look at the ski being sold.

Once again I don't want this to turn into a huge battle. Let's have a civilized discussion about an obviously touchy subject that everyone usually won't talk about in a for sale thread.

Thanks:biggthumpup:

sadly aftermarket items do not increase value much. could see a cf hull and custom paint in PRISTINE condition upping the price but usually not even half the cost of the mods.
ive already learned this riding 50s. i got over 5grand in my 50(including the bike), i wouldnt be able to sell for over 2.
thats why im not selling my toys!

ive just settled for saying it's mostly a matter of opinion. When buying a car, ski, bike etc. i forget about kbb and all that and just decide what its worth to me personally. There will always be debates about value and it really just comes down to personal opinion if u think about it... my .02

A safe figure to use when valuing aftermarket parts is 40% of retail. One can use KBB or NADA, adjust that price for the market, add up their receipts for all their add-ons, then subtract 60% of the receipt total and get an idea of a fair asking price.
Sometimes it's painful to look at the numbers but it is what it is. There's a buyer for every ski being sold. It's kinda like EHarmony.com. You just have to find the compatible pair.

I think the bottom line is you will never get your money back for the mods done to a ski. if all the mods were used you might get a little closer to getting your money back but if your adding brand new stuff it just wont ever happen. your ski does look pretty nice though so I would not be suprised to see you get top dollar for it.

most people cant see buying a ski for 5-6 grand if its not brand new from the dealer, AF parts or no, myself included. The craigslist market is much higher then the enthusiast market, thats a fact. Stock 650's around me sell for 1500 without a trailer, and some people ask 2 grand and get 17. Its insane. Since its a luxury item and standups are kinda rare, regional difference are huge as well. Of course, I couldnt sell a good AF ski here, as everyone would be saying 'well, theres this 650 for 1500'.

I would probably do that, but I am unable to part it out cuz I'm up at school in Alabama and the ski is in Florida until I graduate in May and the plan is to pop the big question the day of our graduation. In my case I really don't want to sell the ski in the first place and if I had to take a big loss I would rather take a loss on a loan or something and get to keep the ski.

you never bring the ski up there?

we need to ride sometime down here ,last week we had 10 stand ups riders

I keep it in Florida for the winter so I don't have to pay storage fees then I usually bring it up for the last part of the spring semester, but I am in my last semester of Aerospace Engineering and I just want to focus on school and not have any distractions.

Come May 10th I graduate and I'm done with school forever:arms::woot: :Banane01: then it's off into the Air Force. Luckily I'll be at Pilot Training at Columbus AFB, MS so I'll still be in the warm south. I definitely plan on still riding a ton. I would definitely be up for a weekend trip to ride with ya'll.

Dude---you may be "out" of school come May 10th, but you'll be going to just as many classes as before. You said it yourself in the very next sentence. The Air Force thrives on training---this is coming from a prior Air Force plumber---pilots are much more valuble and therefore require much more "schooling." :haha:

What plane are you learning to fly with the Air Force? I know you have mentioned it before, but I don't recall at the moment. We have the F-22's here in Panama City. :woot:

Congrats on the upcoming engagement, too. Cool idea to pop the question on the day you both graduate. :cool2:

Don't sell the SJ unless you have no other options. You'll have plenty of opportunities to use it in Mississippi.

I appreciate it.

As far as Pilot Training being more schooling I don't really consider it schooling. I know it will be tough, but at least it will be fun and interesting. Beats the heck out of English and History classes thats for sure.:banghead:

I'm really excited though. I hear Pilot Training is the hardest year of your life, but a lot of fun at the same time. They say Pilot Training is just a continuation of college, but you actually have money and aren't the living the poor college student life anymore.:Banane01: Thank God cuz I'm sick of being poor.

As far as what aircraft I want to fly...

First I'll be flying the new T-6(trainer):

T-6A_Texan_II.jpg

Then as long as I do well in the T-6 I'll go onto fly the T-38(Fighter/Bomber Trainer):

t-38-199905172ship.jpg

Then as long as I do well in 38's I'll get to fly the aircraft of my dreams which is the Viper(F-16):woot: :

I'm really glad they're sending me to Columbus, MS for training though. That was my first choice because it was either that or Laughlin AFB in Texas or Vance AFB in Oklahoma. :cool2: I'll be glad to spend a couple more years in the good ole south. After that I have no idea where I'll go. I will tell you Aviano AB in Italy and Ramstein AB in Germany will be at the top of my list. Did you ever have any overseas tours Chic?

Just a post back on topic then back to the AF.

I look at used skis and think that there is no way you can build a ski for what they sell for. Used skis are a steal even when they are over $4000. If you want you can buy a decent beatup stock ski for $3000 then invest $1000 in parts and countless hours in labor. Another $200 in bolts and things like hood straps and such. After a summer of working on it you have your perfect ski and it cost (not including labor) $4500. Wouldn't it be smarter to buy a ski with the things that you want already and just ride? Maybe do a little thing here or there like change out the throttle becasue you want an angled UMI instead of straight.

My story, I just switched skis this year. I went from a 01 to a 96. Yea I went down in years but I up graded from a limited ski shortned stock pole to a ski that has about everythgin. Great paint job, AC pole, 5mm stroker ADA cylinder 850cc motor, Full Spetrums, Lowered hood and bracket, All Xmetal parts, It is set up and the difference in price was less than a bore and port job. And I got the AC pole the Full Specs lowered hood, sweet paint job and all the xmetal stuff was a freebie part of the deal. The only thing I done to the ski was add 2 bilge pumps and cut the AC pole down. And took it apart to make sure all the bolts are tight.

But after this long post I am trying to say that 5k for a built ski is still a deal when a 3K ski will end up at the same dollar figure after all the tuning headaches and aftermarket stuff needed to build the ski up to what you wanted but didn't want to spend

Isn't the F-16 the falcon???

Laughlin is not in Texas...it is in Nevada. Here in San Antonio we have Randolph AFB where they do training. I always have T-37's and T-38 flying around overhead.

Yes actually the real name of the F-16 is the Fighting Falcon which Lockheed Martin came up with, but you will never hear a real fighter pilot call it the "Fighting Falcon". Real fighter pilots call it the Viper.

Laughlin AFB is in Del Rio, Texas 30 minutes from the border of Mexico and NOT in Nevada. Randolph AFB is NOT a UPT (Undergraduate Pilot Training) base. They do have training there, but the training they have is for soon to be UPT IP's (Instructor Pilots) who go there to learn how to become instructors. Randolph is also where "Heavy" Navigators go for training.

I've actually been to San Antonio twice. The first time I spent 6 weeks at Lackland AFB for Field Training (They actually no longer have Field Traning there). The second time I was there I spent 3 days getting my Flight Physical from the doctors at Brooks City Base. Those are 2 things I am glad I never never have to do again.

My bad on Laughlin. Which base is in Nevada???:banghead:

I fly commercial on a weekly basis and the flights into SA are always full of kids coming here for Basic training at Lackland. I really feel for them in the summer here.

I live 10 minutes from Randolph and it is always strange to see fighter jets come in here, when what we usually see are the trainers. You guys would know...what would they come through here for? Fuel?

Let me also say thanks for defending our country!!!!!!!!

No worries. You're probably thinking of Nellis AFB outside of Las Vegas. That is pretty much the fighter pilot mecca. The Thunderbirds are based out of there, Red Flag is based out of there, Fighter Weapons School (Air Force Top Gun) is based out of there. I have yet to go, but I hear it's a really cool base.

Cool, who do you fly for?

Yeah man I feel for those kids also. Basic Training is tough. Most of those kids are fresh out of high school. I went to Field Training (Officer form of Basic Training) there 3 summers ago and it was so freaking hot. My shoes actually melted when we were marching for hours out in the heat.

I have so much respect for those kids. They go put up with that Basic Training and then they get no time off and they're already headed off for Tech School and then to their Squadron.

When I finished Field Training I was so glad I got to go back to College for 3 more years. Now I'm ready to get out of college though.:hail:

Yeah they probably are just stopping for fuel and as one of their legs on a cross country flight. There are so many bases in Texas cuz the weather is so great for flying down there.

I appreciate it, but I haven't done anything yet. I still can't believe they are going to pay me to fly a jet and have all that fun.

My hat goes off to the young enlisted guys busting their a$$ in the desert right now. Those guys are the ones that make it happen. I would never be able to get my jet off the ground and bombs on target without those guys.
