Another Yamaha Octane hybrid

Better late than never… I have had this ski built for a little over a month now, but have not had time to post anything. A handful of people know about it and a select few have had a test ride as well… :brap:


Oh, and I did this as a “My Ski” thread instead of a “build” thread because there is really nothing special about how it was assembled (and I didn’t have assembly pics). If you have seen a SJ being built, this was just the same.

So here goes:
I acquired this hull from Pat Bogart at x-metal back in the spring (details here). I had been building a OEM SJ hull that was to be as lightweight as possible: (build here, for sale here), but I was just too busy this year to ever see getting it finished any time soon. So I saw this hull from Pat and since I already own an OEM Octane, I was very intrigued. I went ahead and bit the bullet, bought the hull and began to put it together (slowly…). I always knew the Octane hull had great potential, but was still a little doubtful. This particular hull is hand-laid, semi-lightweight fiberglass with carbon reinforcement. It was originally built by Wamiltons for an overseas customer. It is definitely light for an Octane, the Hull, hood, turf, and front exhaust w/ hose weighed 120 lbs. The other cool thing about this hull is that Wammer built it to accept a “small block” Yamaha engine (62t based). Since I had all my parts lying around to build the SJ hull, it would all drop right in.

Here are the Specs:
HULL
  • Semi-Light weight Wamiltons Octane hull, built for Yam 62t drivetrain
  • Dual Wamiltons Scuppers
  • Wamiltons Freestyle Octane Hood
  • X-Metal bracket, -2 pole, turnplate, bars, hood hooks (had to cut them down to fit the Octane)
  • Watercraft Factory carbon chinpad, cut way down, reshaped and covered in embossed hammered vinyl.
  • Gas filler covered with Carbon fiber plate.
  • Turf was already done by Wamiltons but I pulled up the back to add a kick-tail and additional padding.
  • Wamiltons SJ carbon ride plate, that I cut & trimmed to fit the Octane hull w/ D-cut
  • Trimmed off back flange
  • Removed the Wamiltons sponsons (tubbies) because I did not want the weight nor did I believe this light of a Octane hull would benefit from them (I was right BTW)
  • I plan on trimming another ¼” off the bond flange over the winter. This will save a little more weight and improve handling even more IMO.
ENGINE
  • +8mm stroke x 81mm bore Lamey PV built by Team Scream. – (I bought this engine 2 years ago in a Pro-Mod race Blaster) IT RIPS!!!!!
  • MSD Digital T/L – currently not mounted or wires routed the way I would like, but I was in a hurry to get her running! Will re-do this winter.
  • Full Spectrum dual 46 carbs w/ Boyesen/Full Spec Manifold
  • TNT chamber with ceramic coating
  • X-Metal Waterbox
PUMP
  • OEM Yam 144mm w/ TBM pump cone – (shortest cone used)
  • Skat-Trak 144 12/17 Mag pump impeller
  • Worx intake grate
  • Pro-Tec trim Nozzle, flipped to up position. Does not have much travel now, but I plan on making some mods to the nozzle over the winter to allow more throw.
  • Nozzle bored to 84.5mm
The Ride:
I have mentioned this before in some other threads (such as superramjet’s Octane Build)… This thing handles like NO OTHER OCTANE I HAVE EVER RIDDEN. It is amazing what a lot of weight reduction, coupled with a lightning quick responsive engine will do to the handling of an Octane. It handles like a dream… very SJ-like, yet way more stable. And just super comfortable to me. It feels so light and just hops out of the water! I couldn’t be happier!!!

I have concluded and I’m sure Tom will agree that bigger hulls (octanes/SXRs) are greatly underestimated and dare I say…. the future of this sport (hint, EME, Trinity... anyone???). I was always hardcore 100% SJ, with an appreciation for the Octane, but now I think its the other way around!

I will try to keep this thread updated as I make changes and upgrades…

forgot to mention... The complete ski weighs 299.5 lbs. with battery, no fuel. Complete, ready to ride! :bigok:

I still remember being at Ronny's spraying my first paint job when you were posting pics of your SJ right after you got it back from the painter. Back in 2003

Got to ride it at Pismo. What a treat! Ski handles great (without tubbies!) Could feel it rode higher in the water than mine. With all that power it was quite a handful in Pismo's surf. I love this ski, Neil. Gives me motivation.

Now, what did you say about the SJ after riding them back-to-back?

My SJ is still better in the surf, hands down. I believe its because of the added weight, tubbies , and a smoother powerband. The light Octane with all that power got bounced around pretty good in that bumpy, massive Pismo surf... definitelty not where it shines, but very ridable and fun just the same. I just felt more at home on mt SJ there this time.

However, this new Octane rules supreme in flat-water! I would much rather ride it than my SJ here at home. Of course, thats what I built it for... light weight, big power, flatwater fun!

Thanks, it was your opinion and superramjet's too that really validated this build :biggthumpup:. i knew it was good, but I needed the opinions of other Octane owners... SJ fanatics just dont get it!!! HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! :09:

I'm always open to trying something new but when I ride Christians it seems like a chore to handle like I want, but from what you say it's a rider modification to get the best from the Octane. (slow down your speed to get the same results).

For me it just handles different, and thus requires me to change mindset.

that ski blows away any sj i have ridden to date. Its so nice and comfortable and handles very different from a regular octane. Sick build Neil, way to ride outside of the box.

Handlepole pad is one of my favorite parts too.

O MY GOD! I am in love. :bigeyes: That is one of the sweetest skis I have ever seen. I will build something like this one day.
I agree. I may be biased, but Wammer's Octane hull looks better than any other AM hull I've seen with perhaps the EME giving it a run for its money.
