Do you have to tear down the engine to set up a 750 for 650 electronics? I read that you have to have the cases apart to do the job properly and I don't want to go through that right now.

It can be done with the engine still together,it is more easily done with the cases apart. Its one of those jobs thats fine as long as you don't screw it up, if you screw it up there really isn't any going back and repairing the damage.

The front of the cases needs to be machined, it's best done with them apart.
That depends on the year, early 750's just need to be drilled and can be done without teardown if carefull. I have some cases here to measure the depth if you need it.

It can easily be done with the engine assembled and is recommended if you're not using a milling machine. Just be sure to keep the metal shavings away from the crank seals with duct tape or whatever.
Obviously, the proper way is to use a milling machine for an absolute perfect job but a dremel tool with the proper bit (90 degree metal cutting) and a steady hand works just as well.

To grind down the 4 mounting surfaces to the right diameter and keeping the stator coencentric with the crankshaft I drew a template in ACAD. Simply measure overall diameter of the stator and crank shaft, print & cut to size (I made the final template from cardboard). The inner hole will fit snugly on the crankshaft and then you mark the outer diameter at the 4 mounting posts.
Use a hole punch to mark your screw holes, drill, tap and your done.

The big pin cases also need the wire outlet drilled and tapped. For this just drill a hole for the grommet and then use a taper bit so the hole is tapered, which will provide a better seal. Then, mark, drill & tap your 2 mounting screws for the retaining plate.

Well I paid Group K years ago to do a 750 SS I used in a 650 SX. I sent them the cases first. Then Harry called and said he needed the stator to make sure he machined it right. So I sent him the stator.

If you ask me, I would have them machined. If you are going ot machine them, you need the crank out of the cases. I know a lot of people on here have dremeled them but I like my stator to stay intact. I would rather pay the money and have it done right by someone who knows how to do it rather than do a home job and ruin a set of cases... Cases are around 4-500 bucks!

Besides you got a machine shop hook up. All you need to rebuild your engine would be crank seals, gaskets, circlips, some threebond, and a little loctite.

My compression numbers are off. If my engine comes apart, it's getting a bore, piston and rings, maybe some porting and all of that. Too much to go into it right now. I'd rather keep it together for a season or two and do all of the work at one time.

I'm going to order the R&D timing plate tomorrow.
