Has any body ever made a custom freestyle hood using a stock hood? i plan on trying it out myself i am going to put some hand holds in it and shave it down alot. my question is i know there are vent tubes inside of the hood. do they have to be there, could i make them smaller? also if i am lowering the hood am i going to need to buy a lower pole bracket and different hood mounts? any input on this would be great.

i pulled the entire liner out, including stock vent tubes. filled in the front vents, opened up larger vents in the rear, made a new liner and installed the oem rubber tubes where I wanted them. while the liner was out i cut the top to make it a low profile hood.

here are a few pics to see how i did it.

I used tape to line up the cut, and used a jig saw to cut it with. once cut out i used cardboard to make a tempate to fill the cut area. made it the same shape to it fit in perfect. (use duct tape to cover the carboard so teh epoxy does not stick to the cardboard). then laid in my cloth on the inside to create the support substructure for the area. I think i used one layer of 8.9 oz and one layer of 26 oz over that (inside).

then once the inside was finished i flipped it over pulled off the cardboard and used marine filler to do the outside work. takes some time to get it smooth and blended to the shape youe want - lots of sanding. then went over that (once dry) with a coat of epoxy to seal it.

also, you might want to run a lowered handle pole bracket or your pole will sit up higher than the nose/hood. you can use the same oem hood brackets.

*note in pic #3, it is important to have your favorite shop dog with you during the cutting process... LOL

a few more - the first coat of filler i put on thick and did lots of sanding. i put about 5 or 6 coats on all together, getting progressively thinner and thinner as i was slowly just filling in scratches and low spots.

note in pic #4 the larger vent holes i cut in the rear of the hood. when you create your liner make sure the rear of the liner meets the bottom of those holes to help drain out any water.

and now for the liner - i used carboard to make a tempate. cut my cloth to fit. used duct tape to cover the entire template - the epoxy does not easily stick to the duct tape. once dried i trimmed and used wamiltons epoxy glue to glue the liner in place.

i made my liner so that it not only glued around the edge of the hood, but also on the center area to provide structural support as well. I also used about a dozen clips to hold the liner to the shell to make sure it was good and tight.

right on guys, thanks.

It's still not as light as an AM hood, but you get that sleek look on the cheap side, so long as you don't mind doing some work. I had a lot of fun making it - and I was doing it for my nephew's ski.

Stock is 21. Where do ya think yours came in at. 16? 17?

if i remember it was like 17. but that included the oem rubber hoses. you can shave a little more off using lighter weight pool type hose. I also made my liner quite thick... using a layer of 26oz sandwitched between two layers of 10oz texalium. it was like 1/8 thick.

Cool, its good to see others doing this. I will be starting one as soon as I get my XMW pole so I can get a line to work off of. I went the route of filling the upper voids with 2 part foam, that way I can make a shallow cut with a dremel and a rotozip bit and lift the top of the hood off and use the foam as a shape-able plug. Hopefully it works like I think it will, should take some of the work out of it.

the last note, and prbly one of the most important things is, I bought a lowered nose piece from Goose before i started cutting. I wanted to make sure i lined my hood up with it. since not all lowered nose pieces are the same you may want to figure that out 1st then line your hood cut up with that.

Good call. I was gonna use a WDK nose piece to get started but the when he buys his own they might not match.
