Still Fat....
i have my pistons thermal coated and side coated too
to me it's worth it for a 2cycle, especially if you are going to play on the edge of detonation

i did it more for protection porposes
it's sorta cheap insurance

Good for closed course racing...not needed for freestyle as you want some piston heat to promote complete combustion burn with richer jetting set-ups that freestyle motors use.

OK, where was that advice when I had my pistons coated? :frown:

Although, now that I am no longer using my top screw on my 'b' pipe, I'm not dripping water onto the pistons, so I guess it's overkill...

I'll be curious to see what a difference it made on this motor when I tear it down.

Differance in opinion on motor builders? Probably. I personaly like the coating. Overkill?? Maybe. Chuck is correct that it benifits high rpm race motors, But a lot of FS riders are running relatively high compression, with low grade fuels. & the timing is always an issue, As is correct tuning. The motors devolop power using BTU output....... HEAT!! anyway to help prevent a deto problem & keep the motor alive is always a good thing.
I'm not disreguarding Chucks statements. He has a wealth of knowlage.
Just a differant way to build a mousetrap! :cool2:

The top screw, when open at idle, has a tendancy to drip water into the exhaust ports. Granted,it's maybe only a drop every 5 or so revolutions, but it's still getting in there. My headpipe is an ex-raceer pipe that had the top screw frozen shut. I re-drilled farther back, but at a shallower angle, and when THAT screw was open it basically streamed into the exhaust.

Without a coated piston, the water contacting the piston can cool it very quickly, shrinking it, and allowing it to slap and scrape those gorgeous Lamey sleeves. Something no-one here wants.

I'm not saying don't do it...I just spend the $$ in other places!! LIKE ON A VERY GOOD IGNITION! Word to the wise...timing curves MAKE horsepower.

FWIW, and if memory serves, I noticed on Magoos boat at the January freeride he has water injection right into the cylinder's exhaust ports....

Shhhhh............ You are not 100% correct, But................:cool2:
