SXR 800 Total Loss Flywheel Worth It?

Im not sure if its the same for kawis, but total loss flywheels arent "charging" flywheels. Im not sure if it would even run. You would have the downside to a TL system (battery doesnt charge its self from the motor) without the benefits of a TL system.

On another note, you can get a regular TBM flywheel not meant for tl (still lightweight) and you will be fine.

TL flywheels will give you more low end torque by allowing the engine to rev out quicker, but you dont have to spend 400+ bucks for one of the aluminum ones. You can take your stocker, remove the magnets and achieve the same thing. The stator should be removed as well, its a little time consuming but a fairly easy process to remove it without cutting any wires. As mentioned above you lose the ability to charge the battery as you ride but with a battery tender the charge can last 2 or 3 days depending on the health of your battery. Mine usually lasts 2 full days of riding before I have to charge it again.

New in package is the only way to go. There is NO WAY I would ever buy a used aluminum flywheel, as they are very easy to crack if not lapped and torqued correctly. I have heard of several that people bought used that were found to be damaged and they ended up getting screwed. Dont take the chance.

You have to have a charging type flywheel (whether LW or not) to charge the battery. Total loss does not charge. IMO theres not enough difference in performance with a LW charging type to justify the price.

Disagree. The SXR Flywheel is VERY heavy.... a charging aluminum flywheel will make a significant difference in low end torque on an SXR (not as true on a SJ).

I am pretty sure that 2004 and newer SXRs can run without a stator and can use a TL flywheel with stock electronics. (adding even more low end torque)

A lightened stock flywheel gives about 1/2 the increase of a aluminum charging flywheel. (It is only like $85 from LPW or GroupK)

Significant? Thats a matter of opinion, but significant enough to justify 4-500 bucks? IMO no. For that price it better make the difference that a pipe does! Me personally I am very happy with a stock flywheel with the magnets removed and the stator out. Now thats cheap and significant.

edit: You are correct about the 2004+ electronics, they can be used as TL

Where are you getting a TBM TL flywheel for $200? That is half the price of any that I have heard of. If in fact you can get a brand new one for that price the short answer is YES get it.

Those are the answers I was looking for. 2 solid yeses. If thats even a word haha
06 ski all I have to do is insstall the flywheel and I'm done no other mods correct?
Thanks for all the help guys

If you use some of the aluminum flywheels such as the J-lines or equivalent you need to remove your stator and machine the nose of the cover.

The Jetnetics, Accel, Vilder you can leave the sator in if its the charging version.

If your after hit and low end its worth it. If your looking for drive through the chop a oem flywheel is good. The weight of the OEM one keeps things in motion more than the aluminum. Thats why many people can ride their limited boats and sometimes even stock class boats faster than mod's / superstocks around the race course.

Let me know how it works. My Vilder isn't charging anyway (bought it used)...(thinking of ripping out the stator and getting a TL flywheel)
