Super Jet MattSmith America Ski SJ Build

So I decided after building a 4 SXR's, i thought i was ready to do something different. I feel like i'm cheating on all my kawi friends, but after finding an amazing deal on a mint condition SJ, i had to do it.

This build is not going to be crazy power, or superlite... I went for maximum reliability to withstand 300 days a year oside surfride with zero worry.

here's the foothold, cuts and pipe rerouting for super wide tray.

coming from a kawi, i want the huge tray and the reliability of a hood that stays on. so i rerouted the pipe, and made a kawi style lip as i reinforced the top deck lip area. i got some foam for joanne's fabrics and shaped it the way i wanted help the fiberglass shaping.

then i tried it with poster board on the other side and it was just as easy so either way works. i liked the fact that the fiberglass broke free of the blue masking tape easier on the poster board so that might have the edge on the foam. you can also, using 2 part foam like 227 does, but i'm not as good of a shaper so i cheated.

Sweet! I want to do the hood lip thing as well to mine. How far into the hull do you have the glass going down?

well, since i had to reinforce the hood lip anyway since that is the weakest point on the sj, i cut 5 in. strips and just went down 3in. then also, did the normal side reinforcing and layed that on top of the lip strips so al together there's about 100 oz. of thickness. --ya , i know, its overkill , but i hate to break stuff.

i love the foot holds, did you foam behind them? or just leave it up to the glass?
well technically there is nothing behind because it goes all the way to the outside of the hull. Well I just glass up a bunch on the outside of the foothold/ hull to make it double thick. And then where I re routed the pipe I just put a bunch of polystyrene foam and then once it was glassed then I filled in a little bit of space that was left with 2 part foam. The footholds are pretty much the coolest thing ever. More room that I couldn't ever amagine and since I'm goofy I just love having the pipe down

i plan on doing that with my square, widening the tray 1.5 inches on each side and tray length footholds! im glad to see your build i was curious on how tall to make them.

cool build man i like it

Matts footholds are MONEY! I have all around holds on mine but mine don't go all the way up on the right side due to the pipe. Matts relocation of the pipe was the best idea! He also made the openings super tall and wide, much larger than needed. This is good though because they're easy to fill with padding to get them the right size. I can't tell you how many guys footholds are worth less because after they get all their padding in they can hardly get there foot in! Footholds too big? No prob, fill them with pading, footholds too small-screwed.

Yep just installed some blowsion kickers for a friend, pretty sure they are going to be too small.

Rode Matts ski (i ride goofy as well) and I have NEVER felt more comfortable on a ski. You can ride however you please with this set up and it just feels... well, so good!

Doing this for sure, normal footholds and straps just aren't cutting it for me.
