I still think it is strange that after 87 the HP ratings stick at 41 even with the change over to the reed engine. Maybe one of the more knowledgeable Kawi junkies can chime in on this.

I've never seen a published horsepower rating for the reed motor 550s. They started making those in 1991. I've heard from a few people that they still rated the reed motors at the same hp level as the piston port motor.

The only benefit to the reed motor I've noticed so far (and a nice benefit) is the reed motor is a heck of a lot easier to start than the piston port. They actually start well compared to the piston ports that generally needs a lot of cranking.... or at least my piston port always has.

My buddy put a reed motor 550 in his '90 hull when his piston port motor threw a rod bearing. When compared to my '86 550, they are both dead even in top speed. The two 550s have basically the same mods (same pipes, same impellers) except for the carbs.

His 550 (reed) has a little more pull off idle with the 42mm Keihin on it. But my piston port 550 seems to have much better pull in the midrange and top end with the 44 SBN on it. His midrange and top end pull really suffers from the larger carb on it. The reed 550 comes with a 38mm Keihin as stock setup. This definitely gives better midrange and top than the 42
