Other Help a friend find the perfect vehicle . Vehicle WANTED

Hey

My mate is heading over to the US landing in LA from Australia.
He's got his visa and will be travelling for approx 2-3 Months.
He arrives on the 1[SUP]st[/SUP] of October and is wanting to buy a car to see him out for his 3 month stay.
So if anyone has a reliable vehicle they are wanting to make a quick sale on please PM me.
He has around $1000 - $2000 US and it will need Tags, and be in a condition that would pass Smog test ect in order to put it into his name.
A Wagon or Van would be fantastic or something that could be slept in..
Landing in the LA and would need to catch public transport in order to view or pick up the car so please be in a location not too far.
He has the password and user name to my ACC to view any PM's received about a vehicle.
Or you could email him at Scottmiles@live.com.au and he will be sure to reply.

Thanksfor the help.

I'm pretty sure he would be able to rent a vehicle for less than $2000 for 3 months.
Enterprise rental cars around me rents them for $650 a month off of their website, but they also say you can call in and talk to them to get a better rate on long term rentals. (vans are a little more than $650)
Plus if it ever brakes down, they will be there with a new vehicle for him.

As someone who drives a Budget rental every week with work, I would say the fine print should be checked on that. The taxes and other fees tacked on can add up to be a nice chunk of change on their own...I can only imagine how many taxes & fees would be added to a month+ rental.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply, Renting a car was certainly looked at as an option.
But when renting you don't have any return on the car. Even if you sell it for half of the purchase price you still get something back.
Looking on ebay and other car sales web sites my budget it getting higher as a car for around $2000 is in the very run down stage.

I'm happy to purchase the right car if someone can present me with a reliable vehicle when I arrive would be unreal.

Thanks

You will want to look for older Hondas and Toyotas with less then 200k miles on them. Most of these cars will be able to go 250k+ with no problems. Also make sure the tires on it are decent. A set of tires could cost him another $600+

Hey thanks for the reply.

He is trying to organise a car from ebay or Craigslist but it's proving to be harder then first thought.

To transfer a car to his name does the car need to pass an inspection and smog test?
Is there a way a Not so roadworthy car can be transferred into a buyers name?
Here in Australia you need a to have the car inspected by a mechanic who approves it's fit for the road. Once you get the certificate you take it to the DMV
and pay a fee.

Is your process the same?

Thanks

im not sure about the west coast rules as to emission testing and such, but here in michigan, when you buy a used car all you need is a clear title (with no lein's on it) and a bill of sale. got to the local Secretary of State, pay for plates, tags and transfer of title and you got yourself a car.

If the car is currently registered all he/she would have to do is transfer the title into his/her name. In order to transfer the vehicle into a new owners name, they may require more than just a photo I.D./passport, they may require a U.S. drivers license, has your friend taken obtaining a drivers license into account yet? In Cali your friend will need a physical address to use in order to obtain a drivers license.
