help with 87 550

Just bought my first stand up. Got it real cheap because its not running and the guy i bought it off of bought new skis. It a 87 550. I know you guy are very knowledgable. What should I look for, it turns over fine, new spark plugs, the compression is around 150 in both, the previous owner said it work fine untill the middle of last year. Any help would be great. Thanks Kevin

posting in the old school section might help some, as for where to go from here, I would start with getting it to turn over then do a compression check for yourself so you can verify numbers are close enough to run. then check to see if it has got spark and go from there, probably ought to get that old gas out why you are at it..

run away. Thats what I wish some one would have told me to do when I got my 550. just run the junk away. that thing is a money pit.
I'd have to disagree on the money pit comment. (Keep in mind I've owned for < 1 year)

Anyways, you need 3 things for an engine to run: fuel/air, compression, and spark.

Right now, my money's on a fuel/air problem. Tried dumping a little bit of gas straight into the carb?

Good spark?

Ditto pour some gas down the carb hold the throttle wide open and see what happens,if cranks up and then dies you know its not getting fuel. Those carbs are very tempremental and at the least get a rebuild kit and tear it apart.Replace every gasket in it and the needle and seat, make sure all the surfaces of the carb are spotlessly clean. Also you can pull off the return line and blow pressure ito it this will prime up the fuel syatem and it will spit fuel out of the return fitting on the carb, you will then know that it has fuel to the carb,if it has fuel to the carb and will not run other than pouring gas in the carb, you know its time to rebuild the carb for sure.
