is it uncommon to have no shims in your pump?

When I switched out the stock reduction nozzle for the Sato Engineering Reduction nozzle, I had to shim. it was minimal but still necessary as the feet were slightly lower than OEM.

I'm not looking forward to shimming my pump. It seems like it will be difficult to determine if it needs them. This is all just in case I forgot to label them when I took off the pump.

It's really quite easy, you snug up the front bolts like they said above and slide shims in to fill the gap at the back. If you have your engine out and your midshaft assembly off, you should also verify that the shaft is protruding out thru the bulhead dead center to the opening and you are good to go. 100% Alignment isn't absolutely necessary but just understand that the closer you are to perfect, the longer your splines and bearings will last.
