Whats a safe amount to guess it is going to cost me to ship a 6m6? i am at work and just want to give the guy an estimate. but i dont know what it weighs to get a shipping cost. it will have the manifold and carb on it. and i live in the midle of the US so the fartherest it could be is like washington.

generally cheaper than that, in my experience.

probably under $50, even with a wooden crate and insurance for several hundred $$$.

you can goto ups.com and type in dimensions and weight and zip codes, and they will get you a pretty accurate cost.

Lets hear more about this rubbermaid shipping? i may use that idea.

A cooler is the safest, that is how all the motors leave out of here. Pretty much indestructable. But basically is an inexpensive hard sided shippig container. The coolers have wheels on them also.

Cardboard just doesn't hold up to abuse with a 40-60lbs in it.

i double bagged the motor in plastic garbage bags, then sprayed "Great Stuff" down up under it and up the sides. but the one thing I did not do is protect the top like I should have. I left the plugs in there to cover the holes and had one a bit loose, either somehting got dropped on top of the container or they dropped the whole thing and it messed up some threads on the head.

Next time I will foam the entire box and then double box it with 2 rubbermaid containers.

I have found Fedex to be MUCH cheaper for shipping large and/or heavy items.
If I recall correctly, I shipped a complete 650 long block (including exhaust) in a Rubbermaid container (franken-taped to hell :biggrin), weighing 83lbs, for 60ish to Michigan.
UPS wanted almost $100.

Anything under 150 lbs. with UPS shouldn't be over 75 dollars (thats shipping from east to west coast using ground). I work for UPS in there main air hub in Louisville, and the most thing i see people do with expensive and heavy packages are "there not packed or supported enough". People don't realize how many hands will touch the package in "any" parcel system. Just to send a package next day air - the package will touch around 12 different people (thats in an automated system.) Think about a package that would be shipped using the ground system from east to west.

** make sure the boxes can support the weight of the package and makes sure the item doesn't move around at "ALL". Using good packing tape, is a plus.

If you ship anything ground with UPS on the east coast - transit time is 2 days in most places.

Your companies website disagrees.
I just got a quote of $89.36, for the package I described (83lbs), ground shipping zip 99337 to 30301.

Add taxes, and you're looking at almost $100

Fedex will be cheaper, based on multiple experiences with heavy/large items.

Go to Fedex and tell them you want to open up an account. It's free, and it will save you about 20% or so. Only crappy part is they keep your cc number on record. Overall it's is cool because you don't have to sign anything when you ship stuff...just fill out the paper work and leave... just bad if you are paranoid about your credit card number

I personally have an account, it doesn't bother me at all.

i shipped 2 motors, one was a shortblock with manifolds ( no electrics etc. ) in a cardboard box, with packing of course, cost was $80. I also shipped a straight shortblock (nothing on it) in a wooden crate, cost was $80. Both were sent via UPS.

forgot to add: both motors were shipped from PA to either NC or MI. and also, usps doesnt ship items over 80lbs.
