Freestyle Nose Stab on an 08+?

Ok, so I've been riding a couple seasons now, put footholds and an intake grate on, but otherwise stock ski. I've finally started to learn how to control my weight to get the 08 to get off of it's rails when turning, and have started trying to do nose stabs.

So, I went out on the river with a buddy who has a pretty heavily modded '04 SJ (b-pipe, head, waterbox, pump cone, trim, steering, ligter hood, and the works) After a quick set of pointers from him, I went out and started givin it a go on the '12 SJ... all I could get is a 1/4turn/roll followed by a flop into the water. he tried it... same thing. So Obviously i had to try his ski...

Prehop, land, crank bars gas, aaannnnd without even knowing what happened i was inverted above the water goin nose down. had never done it before so as soon as the nose entered the water my face QUICKLY approced the handlebars so I bailed, but i guess I had it if i'd have rode it out.

Question is: is it even possible to do a nose stab on a stock 08+ with the OEM steering?

Thinking of moving the cable inward at the nozzle this weekend to see if that helps, but I just thought I'd see if others are able to do stabs without many mods

never tried when my 2012 had stock steering.. but after -4 on the pole, cold fusion plate and quick steer mod on the factory nozzle(moved linkage as close to pump as i could).. hop to the right stab to the left no problem(haven't been very consistent off a wake)...

my neighbor has a bone stock 2012, maybe i'll jump on it this weekend and see if i can get it to go(i don't have high hopes).. I've been on his once since i redid mine, and i can't hardly stand that long pole.. i honestly think that might be the ticket, you can get your weight to the nose to keep it low...

One of the girls I ride with has a 12 SJ and the stock steering was not responsive at all. Pretty much needed a complete lake to pull a turn, when she did all her mods we changed the turn nozzle and moved the attachment point in. This made all the difference and her ski is so much better now. You could get the same results from a turn plate that allows you to move the attachment point out. Example, on my rickter I have the turn plate attachment out pretty far and then my nozzle attachment is in close, that thing can turn in a hall way.

2008 and up steering is fine once you figure out that you need to lean the ski over like you mean it. Works great.

Thanks for the input guys, I'm going to bring the dremel with to do the quick steer mod, but I'll hit the lake for a day first with the helmet and just go balls out with some different weight placement and see what happens.

Will try to get some video!

Ok so back for a report.

Moved the cable pivot about an inch in towards to nozzle. It definitely made a difference, not night and day, but enough to force me to reprogram the muscles a bit for turning, etc.

After a day getting comfortable, went for a nose stab, with a couple buddies watchin, and based on what they described, I did more of an inverted sub. entered upside down, but at a shallow angle while moving forward, Think I need to get some practice with setup wakes to get the true nose stab going.

Regardless... the free quicksteer mod, definitely made the trick within reach on an otherwise stock LRN SJ

You need a quick steer, the extra throw really helps throwing the ski off the wave. Shmitty on the forum makes a quick steer set up for the 08 up sj. I ran this on my 08 for a few years now.

I've tried contacting him regarding the trim and steering cable setups he has but haven't had any success. I've considered designing my own clamp system that's compatible with the RN (96-07) cables, but haven't gotten around to ordering an old cable yet - That's more of a winter project. Planning to tear down and model everything up in CAD this winter while i'm reinforcing.

Been riding an 09 with stock steering for most of the summer. Steering is absolute garbage. Doesn't matter if you lean it over. sit turn. or leg drag it doesn't matter, the steering is absolute garbage either way. Can still nose stab just have to be super aggressive. Sure you can make it turn how you want after "figuring out you have to lean it over like you mean it" but who wants to have to be super aggressive just to turn around 180 degrees just to make it back to you setup wake. stock steering would be great for racing...total bs for freestyle.

Funny you mention setup wakes... That's what I was practicing last weekend. Trying to get the thing to kick around while maintaining balance pushing against the turn isn't easy on the 08+ setup. Moving the cable in on the nozzle definitely helped, but no where near like riding my friend's 04 SJ with turn plate and cable moved in at jet... talk about turning on a dime.

I installed the shmitty cable about 6 months ago on my friends 2010 superjet along with moving the pivot point on the nozzle in as much as possible and installed a cold fusion turn plate, it helped a lot but his ski turns nowhere as fast as my 2001 superjet, I've ridden a few newer superjet that have the rear bond rail trimmed up and that helps loosen them up a bit, we haven not done that mod to my friends ski yet because he wants to keep the hull as close to stock for resale value.

Anyone know how hard it is to fit the 07- cable on a 08+ superjet? appearnly its got more throw

It mounts a little bit different on the handle pole side. Other than that it bolts right in. I'm running a 07 cable in my 08 sj, but I have an aftermarket pole.

For those of you with a 08+ superjet I suggest looking into an aftermarket steering nozzle. Just get a nozzle that fits a raider 700, they are the same as a super jet. I'm running a riva nozzle on my ski and it made a difference with the stock setting. On the nozzle it has two steering positions. One position is stock and the other is faster than stock. I noticed a difference on the stock setting and I really noticed a difference on the faster setting.

Between my steering cable, turn plate, and steering nozzle my 2008 turn just as good if not better than a 07 super jet.
