I'm going to pick one of the purolator filters tonight and cut it and an OEM Yamaha one open to compare them.

Anyone already do this? What difference should I be looking for? I've heard the purolators are a paper filter but aren't both of them anyway?

The purolator filters are way cheaper but that's only a deal if they are of an equal or better quality right?

Advance Auto sells them for $2.99

to me a filter is a filter. you shuldn't hav huge chucks of chit in your oil anyway and if you do the filter is the least of your problems.

But just so you know, on certain motors the oil filter has a function as a restrictor of sorts. On vw's we lost oil pressure when we used some filters and then we noticed that there was a extra metal part inside with a spring. when we used other filters with it in there we were all good.

I don't believe that yamaha has anything special to be concerned about and have used off brand filters for a while. but I would always check to make sure when you want to make a change.

Are the purolators the small ones that x-metal recommends? Their link is dead in the thread I had saved so I could order some.

I would bet those are exactly the same as oem. What I don't like about these is that it keeps air in it and it is hard to mount in an attractive way without the oem mount.

Does anyone have a link for the x-metal ones?

Kinda off of the topic but I just ordered 2 pairs of OEM style filters off e-bay for 14.95 shipped to my door! They look just like OEM and were a fraction of the price. I believe the shipping was around $6 so I got 4 filters for less then $9 The guy was super friendly and easy to deal with, been trying to get him over here. He belongs to you know....The other site.

I bought 12 for $22.95 shipped last night. :sneaky:

I parted out a couple yamaha couches so i have 3 or 4 of the complete oem mounts on the shelf plus a much better seadoo cleanable one. I should have an extra if you need one MC.

Well here's the results, I can see why the OEM filter would be the choice for many.

The purolators are cheap so you can afford to replace them often but I just can't see ever having to replace the OEM ones. $15 a filter doesn't seem that unreasonable to me now.

I just bought a few from fuellines.biz because they were cheap and I was buying fuel lines anyway. Anybody use those?
