Hey Dubs... I think I know what's wrong! Sounds to me that you have the purple switched power wire hooked up to the starter battery cable side of the relay, make sure that the purple wire is fed from the battery cable side coming to the relay.
The ignition is only getting power when your trying to start it, then engine starts, then you let up on the start button and engine dies from no power to the ignition!
This is not the first time I have seen this...
P.S. You never stated exactly what model you have and if this is a newer Pro Digital MSD multi-channel TL?

If you had posted more details of how you had it wired, I could have helped sooner as I have used MSD TL's from the very beginning...

OK let me see if I can do this...

Good it worked...
I went to the shop and got the wiring diagram for the 4270 in my old drawer full of all kinds of old stuff...Busch Cup posters, Twist head instructions, Boswell, Novi, and Buckshot instructions, old watercraft stickers like PJS, Westcoast, Jetlyne, Coffmans, Champion spark plugs and some old Personal Watercraft issues from '93 and of course a few sets of old MSD instruction stuff!

The wiring diagram for the 4242, 4243 and the 4244 is the same except for the 4270 uses plug in chips for settings.
-------------------------------------------
I don't use the Lanyard switch pictured. (from MSD)

When using for a Superjet OEM lanyard/start/stop, they have 4 wires for it.
Red and Brown= power for start relay
Black and White= kill circuit/teather cord
---------------------------------------------
Tap into the pair of greens from the trigger going to the ignition control,
One tap goes to the Black wire to the handlebar switch
the other tap goes to the White wire to the handlebar switch

Main battery cable to post on relay would be your positive supply for start circuit.
Use a 1/4 eyelet off relay battery cable stud for wire to going to red start switch.
Use the brown (start button) coming from the start switch and use for the relay hot small trigger post on relay, the other small post, wire to ground.
------------------------------------------------------------
Use a 1/4 eyelet off of positive battery cable on relay for purple wire to inline switch or a plug in connector then on to ignition control.
(P.S This is the purple wire, that I was talking about in post...hooked up on the starter side post)
----------------------------------------------------------------
Follow the rest of diagram for wiring.
----------------------------------------
I never use the hole shot feature (unit 4271) or the gray tach wire
Leave wires capped off from control unit.
----------------------------------------------------
Note: unit 4271 holeshot unit also has a brown wire also for a kill switch hookup.
If you used the spliced method into the pickup greens, you can cap this also.
if you use this wire, don't use the wire taps into the greens for the stop switch.
Run this Brown to the White wire from start/stop switch, Black from start/switch to a battery ground point.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

thanks for your reply i will use it to rewire the system if i keep it, right now i am putting my stock electronics in to see if it will run with them. if it does i may just sell this total loss system as i dont feel comfortable with it right now knowing as little about it as i do. supertune thanks so much i am definately gratefull. what is the easiest way to torque down a new flywheel with the motor still installed in the boat?

I have a welded thick solid stud in a sparkplug tool for a piston stop, then just torque the flywheel bolt to 65-ft-lbs. I have been told that a small rope coiled into the chamber through the sparkplug hole for a piston stop works too.

Update. I just got all the stock electronics hooked up and left them out of the hull while i tested, then said a little prayer hit the switch and Bam Instant Brap! hopefully i can get it all back togather tomorrow and hit the water for the first real ride this summer. PS i will have a total loss setup for sale soon. needs all the connections cleaned up and waterproofed but should work then.

I understand completely. I'm gonna test this new coil today in mine and if it doesn't run like a bat out of hell then I'm putting stock electrics back in there...sick of troubleshooting.
