Wake Jumping Etiquette (Safety)[ORIGINAL THREAD]

I can't tell you how many times I had to go way out of my way to avoid a couch. Didn't matter if I was trying to catch a cruiser wake or just trying to get from point A to point B, those damn things were everywhere. I know there are semi decent people that ride them, but it seemed like most of them were riding like f'ing morons. I cussed them all weekend.

There's a lot of people who were there who do not read this specific thread. I let my wife got out on the Blaster and never told her about this year's "etiquette" and she got scolded :)

That was me - sorry. I felt really bad afterwards :frown: It wasn't her fault - she just didn't see the other people and was having fun slaloming on the wake. I hope she didn't take it personally....

Wake jumping safety

This is an old thread, back by popular demand. I tried to bump it but I think it's in an archived forum so I couldn't reply. Post replies here I guess.

I'm posting this again as a reminder - there are lots of new people in the sport in the last couple of years which as absolutely great. However, a few near misses at the weekend has a few of us thinking about safety so it seems like a timely reminder.

Have fun, and be safe.

In all honesty I have never seen that post before ,I got here 9/9/2009 three months after the last post on that thread,it should probably be bumped before any ride coming up involving jumping boat wakes.Just a suggestion.

I was kicking myself for not having done that before this weekend.

you know...i find it extremely difficult to jump these wakes...obviously san diego is a naval town, so we get a lot of huge ships rolling in and out. when i do cruise out in san diego bay with my buddy, we can't jump the wakes because there will be another roller right behind it and their is about 10-20 ft. of seperation between each roller. Everytime I jump, I case it, just like a dirt bike on a track. And that is clearly bad for my ski because I hear a loud thump each time that happens. Maybe jumping wakes off a 15-25ft is easier to clear? any suggestions would be helpful, my friend and i cant figure it out...

The size doesn't matter, you have to hit the sweet spot...right after the 2nd wake forms. You roll over the first one and HIT the 2nd one.... like the pic below...

The thread is not how to hit the wake to jump, it is about the proper etiquite when a group of people are chasing the same boat.. or better yet, Safe Jumping 101. Every body from left to right, then right to left, follow the leader but at intervals so as to not land and smash someones head in.

I like to hit the first wake about 10 feet or so behind the boat. It's easier to go wake to wake on that one. It's usually the biggest one too. Of course I only do that behind a boat that is putting out the wake just for me, hopefully with some babes on board cheering me on:mischievous:

x2 5-10 feet behind the boat going the same direction as the boat. the white wash is the sweet spot. Big K- we are answering the mans question about hitting the wake, not thread jacking

I probably would have gone that route, however I was running a stock FX1, so I really had to get my momentum up to get the ski out of the water. I had to time my hop perfectly with the correct amount of throttle to do that, and that was difficult.

The link to that thread still works, however, that thread is dead. (won't allow posts, plus it's in the SFF section) Can it be brought back from the dead?:Banane35:

Alright, I went and cleaned up the non essential stuff........ This is a really great thread. Gil mentioned something that needs to happen, It should have happened on saturday.

If someone is providing a boat or not, there needs to be a "riders meeting" about properly jumping boat wakes.

I saw the pics that Kris posted, in half of the pics you can see exactly what does not need to be happening.
