more carnage is dual cooling nessesary

2 weeks ago I got my lamey back together
Sunday I took my 701 out to trouble shoot possible ignition problems and my lightened stator snapped off.Upon furthe inspection I noticed some light suffind in cyls. so I removed them to find a four point cold siezure had occurred at some point. My bore looks like it will clean up.It isat 81.55 m.m. ( which is .001" over 81.5 m.m.).I also found that the pistons had shrunk alot one is .006" smaller then the other leving me with .0075" clearance in one and .0135" in the other(these were new last summer)
I am starting to wonder if dual cooling is nessesary where I normally ride in Canada .
The inside intake side of pto piston is scorched with oil badly showing how hot it got
Who is runnig single cooling on high perfomance motors and how are you making out

stop it im'm getting scared now
maybe i will clamp one of my lines off whle i break my motor in and open it up whne it gets warmer out

sorry to see that man that sux
that is why i rebuilt, had front and back 4 corner siezures last summer

From my personal experience dual cooling is not neccesary unless you are running a dry pipe in warm water. But with dual cooling and cold water that can be a problem. It seems like from your photos that the pistons expanded before the cylinder did. Whenever I ride in cold water (I live in NY) I will put resrtrictors in that way the motor will get to optimum operating temp. Otherwise, you know the result.

Also make sure you give the ski a good warm up when it is cold. I would ride it around blipping the throttle for at least 20-25 minutes before I start beating on the thing.

I think you could run single cooling and have no problems. If you are using a B pipe I would run 1 line off the head to a pisser, and another line from the head to the bottom of the head pipe. Then top of the head pipe to a pisser.

I hope this helps.

this is my set up. phew
heard from many sources this is the way even though most on this board don't seem to think it is " the best"

From my experience that is definitly a four point seizure.

Either you had clearance issues with piston to wall.

Or you did not get a good warm up in.

If you are running forged pistons, they will expand quicker than the cylinder. That it is why it is neccessary to get the motor up to operating temp and keep it there. ( restrictors)

When you put it back together make sure your piston to wall clearance is good.
Also what is the rest of your setup? Compression and ignition?

it certainly doesnt need dual cooling with that setup
you need to measure the water temp coming out the pisser and see what that is
i will have alook through my notes i did have an ideal heat that they seemed to like
but i cant remember it

With that set up I would reccommend single cooling. I think that dual is probably over kill in the conditions that you are riding in. With cold water flowing through the cylinders it never let the motor get up to operating temp.

Also I do not think that you have any ingnition problems since you are running only 170psi. I would say that it was a cold seize.

Art pistons are the same as OEM and are really good pisons. They have a higher silicon content compared to weisco's or similiar forged pistons.

I would say that you should just use single cooling with 3/8 cooling lines. One pisser in cold water and two when it gets a little warmer out.

Hope this helps.

I used to run dual cooling....then I switched back to single line to the motor, and the other line to the headpipe.
