UMI Steering on 96+ SJ

I am installing a UMI steering kit on my '05 SJ and the nuts only screw 1/3 of the way. Are the newer poles 2mm thicker? I measured the kit w/o the pole and it was around 10mm, checked the pole and it is around 12mm.

Anyone else experience this, or is anyone else able to measure the thickness of their pole?

Are you installing it right?

The flat round piece goes on the bottom. The round piece with the stud goes up top.
So, even if was thicker, you'd just have to get longer bolts (those four).

EDIT: Come to think of it...you must be doing it wrong (no offense!)L... screwing the nut on stud has nothing to do with the pole. On the stud go some washers, roller washer thingie, turn plate, and bearing, then the nut.

I have installed these before, and if I remember correctly I posted the instructions for you a while back...

PWCT: UMI Rebuild kit question

(which means I know how it goes together)

I bought a new kit because the old kit on my 2000 was fuct by the previous owner: PWCT: UMI steering problem???? so I bought a new kit for the interim. I bought a rebuild kit for the old steering system, put it on the ski, and sold it installed on the ski. I am now installing the newer system on my new '05.

Now I had this exact kit on my 2000 and it installed w/o a hitch. Now on the '05 the nuts will not thread all the way.

So, to clarify the dealio (I colored it for you Matt), the red bolt and nut, with or without the blue plate, will not thread all the way when I place the plate assembly (yellow) on the pole (black).

Now, not sure if this matters, but the yellow bottom of the assembly does not sit flush with the bottom of the pole.

Now with a dry fit (off the ski) I threaded the nuts so the nylock edge sits flush with the screw, measuered the gap between the plate and the assembly at 10mm. With the kit off, I measuered the thickness of the pole bracket at 12mm. The 2 mm difference is about 2/3 the threads on the nut.

OK, re-read your post...

That is what I need to know, if I need 4 longer bolts. The reason I asked is because I had this exact kit installed on my 2000 and there were no problems.

So, either I am missing something or the pole is 2mm thicker.

I do not have my other ski to compare.

That's strange. I don't think the pole changed...look up the OEM part number for the pole for both years. See if it's different.

Hey Michael,

Just incase you didn't understand my voice mail...

Do not use the cover plate that was included in the kit. It is not necessary and will make the difference in the length of the bolt.

Pre 96 boats have fiberglass Handlepoles so the plate is used for protection. In 1996 Yamaha added aluminum to the top of the handlepole, so the cover plate is not necessary.

I can fax you an exploded view if this will help any further.

Have a Happy day,
Deb
