who has fried a msd brain?

just wondering how many guys have fried a total loss msd brain. My ski ran fine, i shut it off at the switch, removed the fuse to the brain, charged battery for 20 min. let sit for two days and now no spark. i have checked almost everything under the sun. my buddies brain fried the exact same way, parked it over night and the next day it would pop fuses to the red wire going into the brain. mine does not pop fuses but it will not spark if it try to start it or jump the trigger wires. who fried a brain and how did it go about not working.

MSD ignitions do not like to lose their ground.

Make sure you have a good ground.

yeah i keep thinking the same thing but i cannot find a single bad ground. how do you check your grounds? i use my multi meter and checked every post that is grounded and it all reads the same. am i missing something? Ang, i will buy a new brain before i put that stocker back on.

Throughout the years I have sent two of the boxes I use and they were both repaired FOC.

They were both 6AL boxes for my cars, but I can't imagine they are any different for the watercraft stuff.

I have been lucky, my original is still working from 1999. A buddy of mine has been threw about 4 of them in the same time, 2 were new and died within a year..............

Hmmm had the same thing happen to me on a jetinetics charging flywheel.

yep they die and then they will charge you to test it only to tell you they are broken and cannot be repaired. if you bought it new you can call for a return number and send them the unit with the reciept and they will give you a new one. i bought this one used and sent it to JSS for wiring. everything is good that i can tell but i may be missing something. i am having my msd dealer price me a new box. So when you guys blow the brains was it when it was riding or was it when it sat overnight in the off position. i can't belive that i can fire it up on the trailer to clear the exhaust and then park it for two days and it now won't spark. i keep thinking ground but i cannot find a bad ground anywhere unless it is in the wiring right up into the box. my led light blinks once per second and it does it if i have the fuse in and crank it over or when i have the fuse pulled and just the switch on. i am about ready to burn the ski so if anyone has any ideas or parts they want....

Man that is a bummer, I know of myself and lots of car buddies that must much get better treatment than the PWC guys. Too bad.

I would still call MSD "with a kind attitude" and see what they think.

Just for grins, unplug the stop switch to eliminate that. If that doesn't do it, I would also keep looking for ground/power issues. They like strong grounds.

crammit thanks for the input but i did unplug it to make sure the switch was not grounding out the pink wire somehow. anything else guys? i keep coming home from work and try to start it hoping it fixed itself. lol i guess its not like my old VW where if i clean it up a bit it would run better. i have tested the three wires that come out of the brain and go to the coils and i get the exact same voltage as my buddies. i tested my brand new coil in the box and then tested my coils and they read the same. everything i test says its good and it should run. i am going to go look for my lighter.

well upon more testing i found out that i know nothing. today i ordered a new brain and will install it tommorrow. lets hope this will fix the problem. I am going to mount my ignition plate on some rubber to help absorb vibrations. i am thinking that the trailer ride is somehow damaging it, as stupid as that sounds. Me and a buddies ignition has given us problems after being parked overnight after a ride. If anyone else has any input as to how to keep these things alive i am listening.

They will not and cannot repair potted electronics, such as ALL of their ignition brains for PWCs and Enhancers.

I've had an MSD Dual Channel Brain bust.

matt, what happend. how did it go bad? where you riding it or did you go to start your ski one day and nothing?

Never worked again after that, after hours of troubleshooting (and I'd gotten quite good at that)

I used 3 sgl. channel units for years. One finally crapped the bed when water got in between the housing and potting material - it had lasted 7 years! I now have a new dual channel , afraid to install it til I come up with a water tight box for it.
