ive been bumped in the leg by something before. scared the crap out of me. i saw stingrays and dolphins that day so maybe it was one of those. sharks tend to like us new jersey folk so i dont linger in the water too long anymore. we look exactly like a tasty seal from underneath with feet hanging in the water.

I heard they like hair and tanning spray :cat40:

try wearing some tiger print boardshorts...as may know, the tiger is the sharks natural enemy

Though still, anyone actually know if the sound of a motor scares/attracts sharks?

I would guess if anything the sound of the motor can/will/would attract sharks who were curious as to what the unnatural sound is they hear in the water. Obviously when we ride and play in the surf we are right in prime food hunting territory for sharks. We have shark bites every year in NSB and they even caught a HUGE bull shark last summer right in the ponce inlet near disappearing island where everyone likes to hangout and party and swim on weekends and is not far from the NSB / Daytona riding zones. But I cant remember ever hearing about someone being seriously injured or killed on our beaches its mostly hit and runs here. Once they know your not "good eat'n" they move on. But seriously they say most of the time when sharks bite its because the water is not clear and sharks bite people in the legs or ankles to "taste" if its going to be something worth while to eat or not. That being known I wouldn't exactly say its a great idea to just float around out there and swap war stories get in cool off catch your breath and move on. Carter can hang out there all day if he wants not me...lol (joke)

I am more afraid of manatees and alligators here, I see them all the time riding in the lakes and rivers...
X2 on the gators...I prefer the clear ocean by a long shot. I test rode a newly acquired ski in a runoff lake not far from my office, every freshwater body has gators in it in S. Florida, or so we must assume. I knew it was on reserve fuel already but it was supposed to be a short ride, right? was just about to call it quits after 5 minutes just being happy it had not stalled, that the fuel was okay, or that it had not blown in the middle of the lake when I thought Id try a top end run down a finger canal to finish the ride. 250' down the canal I started a turn and starved the pickup-lights out. You know your only in the water for seconds but it feels like its all eyes on you gives me the willies bad. Glad it started back up but when I goosed it again it coughed and quit a second time. rode it back on my knees ready to jump onto the embankment and scramble out of the feeding area if the tank was drained.
Anyone else heard that the engine noise scares gators?

Also seems logical they would associate motors with food, due to fishermen and their catches.

Probably prefer the motors didn't emit oil though.

The only possibly reason I can think sound might disturb certain species, would be if it somehow messes with their little internal gps systems for migration and/or breeding.

was out in lovers key florida with a buddy once and a manta (or sting ray whatever it was) took him clear off his X2....they both wanted the same airspace i guess. i would have not believe it if i didn't actually see it myself from about 30ft away. but sharks are always around and never seem to bother me...i do think about it once in awhile but i also surfed alot and it's just part of it.

is this a real picture or photo shop?

i love shark spotting! daytona isnt the clearest water but whenever i ride down south near jupiter or below its crystal clear. you can spot sharks quite often and kind of see their behavior from your ski or from anything you are doing because its so clear. i rode in front of coral cove one day with my wife on a couch and i honestly couldnt count fast enough to see how many sharks were in the area. i then tried snorkeling alongside other people there and they werent in sight for an hour of snorkeling around the reef.
Also im not the most cautious person when it comes to the buddy system and having properly running equipment when i go out and ive spent many hours broke down floating or attempting to swim in from inlets and never seen anything that would concern me.

this heavyweight tarpon would have done more damage if he was in line with me more than the average sharks :)

Dude I watched your vid and I paused I was like this is an epic pic

Ive only ridden sit downs in the surf so far, my worst enemy is the rocks from the jetty and other boats. I try not to think about sharks. If thats the way i was meant to go, its a great story for my family to tell. Ive never seen a shark in Jersey, but they did film Jaws in South Jersey so its possible.
