1990 Superjet 650

Recently got a 1990 Superjet and the bendix was bad. Bought a new bendix, installed it, and put everything back together. Now the engine won’t fire up and constantly backfires with a loud pop every time I try to start it. Any ideas?

The flywheel is torque tightened to 60lbs. And I did use the woodruff key when I put it back together but I can’t guarantee I didn’t sheer it or it came unseated when I installed the flywheel. I was going to tear it back apart tomorrow to confirm. But just wanted to have an idea of what to look for when I open it back up.

Sounds like it’s advanced on the timing but are you getting a ton of pressure out of the carb when it backfires?

Honestly doesn’t seem like I’m getting much back pressure from the carb. Mostly seems to be coming through the exhaust and water box. But even with starting fluid, no sputter or attempts to start. Just loud as hell backfiring.
I dI’d just take the engine back apart and seen that the timing was advanced ever so slightly. I set the timing back to stock as well as cleaned out the reeds and reassured the flywheel woodruff key was intact and in place.
Going to be putting it all back together as soon as the new gasket comes in to see if that cleared up the issue.
If not, idk what my next steps should be. :-/

Next step is to check that your ground wire has a solid connection. Then see if you have an msd enhancer and swap it out for a used oem cdi. Can also try unhooking your stop switch blk/white wire plug (turn your idle all the way down so the engine dies when you release the throttle)

I’ll check the ground wire ASAP. How do I check if I have an msd enhancer? Also will try the unplugging the start stop switch and see how it goes.

you will have to open the ebox up to check if you have an msd. What you are experiencing is a symptom they have when they are dying.

I did that once. Flywheel wasn't on enough to create a good enough spark to fire the engine even though it did have spark. Had to take back apart, hit flywheel with torch and grease the crank to get it on all the way.
