300/440/550 550 back fire issue

Hey guys
just wondering if anyone has had this happen and can tell me what to look for.

ski starts up fine runs fine with hose hooked up to it wouldnt even know anything was wrong with it revs right up, but as soon as its in the water and you go to get on plain it back fires and cuts in and out. if you feather the throttle you can keep it going fast enough to stand up but it eventually dies out to barely idle.

any help would be awesome!

Possibly timing. Maybe sheared flywheel key

Depends on the year of the engine. 91 and after are reed motors. Before that are piston-port. If your'e not sure or if the motor has been swapped you can tell by looking at the intake manifold.

ok ill have to take it apart and see what it is but if its piston port how do i fix it and how does piston port work?

check flywheel key same thing happened to mine and it was sheared
