300/440/550 550 Mat Kit on the Cheap

If you're like me, and don't feel like shelling out $60 bucks (+shipping) for Hydro Turf, you may want to give this a try. I purchased some heavy vinyl weave (auto fabric) and closed cell phone. I used 1" foam for the base and 3/8" foam for the sides. I used rubber cement to adhere the fabric to the foam and the foam to the ski. The foam and the fabric were cheap (total $20) since I was able to use just some left over end cuts that were discounted.
I have had it on for several seasons and and it still looks great. If I were to do it again, I would overhang the fabric a glue it underneath the foam - for a more finished edge.

I used a yoga mat,... you can purchase new at any wallmart,... 10-15 bucks,.... works great and very comfortable. I used 3 layers using contact cement to adhere.

I'm so mad. I just bought a yoga mat and was going to try it this weekend. I thought I was a freaking genius and I couldn't wait to post my discovery.
How does the yoga mat work when you glue several layers to itself?

Fleebag - Doesn't the carpet foam hold water?

I've had the yoga mat on for about 3 weeks now, and so far it has been working great. The most comfortable mat I've used.

I didn't use carpet foam. I used a closed cell phone for marine applications and you can submerge it and it won't take on water . Many places sell this foam (http://www.foamforyou.com/Closed_Cell_Foam.htm). Assuming that a Yoga mat is made of closed cell, then this will work well also. The material I used on top is somewhat coarse and provides great traction. In the past, when I used just the foam and nothing on top - the foam would start to get picked away and start looking beat up after only one season.
