Hi my brother just rebuilt his 86 550 and we got it to fire but wont stay running. I pulled the fuel lines/screw on cap off the gas tank and I saw fuel in the lines going back into the tank. He got the carb from ebay with a few other parts and my guess is it just needs a rebuild. If anyone has had the same problem or knows what it could be it would be great if you could help, thanks. Also could we run a line straight from the tank to the carb to eliminate the fuel filter as a problem?

There could possibly be bad fuel pressure. If you can try double checking everything out to see if it's good. Then go for a rebuilt on the carb if that doesn't work. If all else fails, get a sbn carb and call it a day

Be sure all your fuel lines are routed properly and you have zip ties at all fittings so you know there are no leaks.
ALSO CHECK:
  1. Tank breather and make sure its flowing in the right direction.
  2. Gas cap seal.
  3. Fuel tank inlet seal.
  4. Pulse line running from carb to crankcase.
Even with everything right, it may tank a while to pull fuel from the tank to the carb, especially if you had everything disconnected. All my skis have fuel primers so I don't every need to crank them much, even after they have been siting for months.

Rechecked lines after a bit of cranking and there is fuel going to the carb. Took the carb off and opened it up, diaphram semms pretty good and there was fuel in the carb when opened. Going to clean it up a bit, put all settings relative to stock and see what happens.
