300/440/550 550 timing help

On a 85 550 how far can you advance your timing with a stock stator? I ask because after cleaning off my stator I replaced it without knowing that it was what controlled timing(I know pretty dumb but I just started working on skis). The ski has been running fine but I dont want to screw up the engine with advanced timing seeing that the compression is already 175. Which way is the stator rotated to advance? Could I just turn it back the oppsite way to be safe?

your best bet is to keep it stock if you want to venture on the dangerous side then you can go 5 to 10 deg thats all I'll say to do.

I think you misunderstood my question. Im not trying to get anything extra out of advancing the timing. I would like to keep it stock and the most reliable but I already took off the stator and when I put it back on im not sure how it should be for stock. I was wondering how much a stock stator will let you advance the timing? Would it be enough to screw it up? And also what way do you have to turn the stator if I need to back off the timing?
