61x cases with 64x cylinder and head, is it a good surf/ freeride platform

Hey guys I'm looking at a 90 sj that has a 61x lower/ cases with a 760/64x cylinders and head. Is this a good wholeshot/ freestyle motor setup?? It has a single mikuni 44 on it and protec dry pipe. Aluminum handle pole and protec half head girdle. What's your opinion. The price is right but I want something for wave jumping and low end balls!

Depends on if it's set up right.
Generally speaking, it's a great low budget surf motor that has plenty of punch.

thanks man,i talked to the guys at group k and they said for 500 dollars the ski can hit a lot harder with porting work and carb rejet. i am trying to decide on two skis a 99 sj with a full 64x engine that has pipe prop and a bunch of other work, or the 90 sj with the 61x-64x setup. 99 has dual 38s, ignition ,dry pipe, prop intake grate ride plate and some other goodies, its a detuned race ski. the 90 sj is kind of a mystery as far as what it is/ has in it as the guy who owns it wasnt thhe one who built it. from what i can see it has a single 44 sbn car, 61x cases, 64x cylinders and head protec pipe and head girdle, prop is unknown.. theres a price difference of 1200 dollars. should i buld the 90 or the 99?

i have the 61x-64x in my blaster. i must say without port work its going to lack alot of bottom end like the 61x cylinder. also depending on the pipe and jetting will also make a big difference. im running a factory pipe and i have dialed it in to where the power comes on a bit quicker. that being said, the motor has to be closer to the mid range rpm before it really comes on. it took some getting used to. i have to say i miss that light switch "hit" that i used to have. group k really does nice work and has the research to back it up if your going to go that route, that would help to make a considerable difference. im actually pulling my topend and sending it out to have the port work done.
me personally, if the 99 was in good shape, and i had the cash, id go that route. by the time you get the porting done, you've purchased the round nose.
best of luck

I agree with the above...if you can afford the extra $1200 I would go for the 99 RN. It is a much bettter platform to start with (motor wise) and will have much bettet better punch.

I built a 61X/64X motor myself and even ported it myself. It had very nice power and I was happy with it for a couple of years.

x2 If you will be riding surf, the RN will be much drier without having to do hood mod on the SN.

X motors in really any configuratiun rule the surf..

IMO that is nonsense...

I just widened the exhaust ports, cleaned up transfers and boost, and cleaned up the bottom

I have one of these motors in my FX-1 with a single 48 MM power bomb carb, B pipe, ADA head, and a modified CDI and it RIPS! I had the cylinder, manifold, and head pipe ported professionally. I estimate this motor cost me around the $1500 range including parts and labor and minus the cost of the B pipe.
