Putting together a square for a spare and doing a 701 conversion .

So I did a little searching and didn't find a definitive answer. Can I use a 61x head on my 62t cylinders?

Motor is 63n from xl700 so head doesn't have bosses for stock exhaust bracket.

I do have all 61x exhaust parts from earlier build so I will reduce mani bolt size with inserts.

If head will work, what head gasket? X or t?

Thanks guys!

Yes. I believe the xl700 is the same as the raider which is a common swap and is 62tcase/62t cylinder. Correct a 61x head will fit on the cylinder so that way you are able to use the stock exhaust mounts

you can use the 62t headgasket for both models of 701 castings
but only can use the 701 61x gasket on a 61x head only

701 61x casting heads are early model head
see the cooling holes here on the 61x gasket

and late model 701 64u casting head
see the cooling holes here for the late 62t gasket

what you cant see is the water jacket casting holes in these pics
late heads have a bridge in the casting for extra strength and are more resistance to blown headgasket failure
see here

the early 61x headgasket has cooling holes right where the casting bridge is on the late heads and blocks the cooling holes in the gasket
see here for non bridged casting and are more prone to headgasket failures
