650 to a 701

Sorry if I'm in the wrong section .

I am buying a 92 sj that needs lower end redone. So I figured I'd just convert it.

Does any engine parts from the 650 transfer over?
For example If I buy a short block of a 62t will carbs etc bolt to the short block to make it complete or do I have to hunt down ALL 62t components?

Thanks

The only things that will transfer over from 650 (6M6) to a 62T is the crank and bedplates. The two intakes and carb setups are totally different so you will need to find a dual carb setup from a 62t motor. Your best bet is to find a complete 61X motor which will drop right in. You can also use your 650 electronics, bendix, starter, flywheel and flywheel cover on a 61X or 62T motor.

You can use the 6m6 electronics but remember that the rev limit is set much lower on the 650 so you might notice you'll be hitting that when you're on the gas earlier than you would if you had a 701 cdi instead. You'll definitely notice this if you have a pipe and you will absolutely need to change it.

Now would be a good time to look for a donor 701 instead of trying to frankenstein an engine. If your 6M6 is in good shape you can always list it for sale and make a couple hundo on it, and part out the pieces of a donor ski that you don't need.

I just posted a 61x engine in the for sale pages. Add your electronics(raise the rev limiter on 6m6 CDI) and exhaust and go.

So a crank from a 650 will fit in 62t cases? And you can run 61x electronics with it?

Yes the only thing you have to watch for is that stator and flywheel are matching. Must be 61x stator/61x wheel or 62t stator/62t wheel. Can't mix and match.

I would consider having someone who knows what they are doing listen to the crank while you have it out. If it's old and decrepit, it could fail on you. If the crank lets go, it could take out everything. I wouldn't skimp too much there.

Also yeah, you're good to go with electronics.

Water box is often overlooked. The 650 SN box is smaller hose connections, and more restrictive. We have used them, by drilling the inlet on the box. Drill four or so 1/2" holes. Go through the inlet down pipe, and through the support plate behind the down pipe. This will allow it to breath better for your new 701 power.

Or, get a 701 water box.
