650sx sudden starting problem

Location

The last time i went riding, like 4 days ago, my 650sx run flawlessly. Sometimes when I tried to start it, it would just click, but after 2-3 clicks it would start right up. Ive been having that problem for about 2 months.

I tried turning on the ski dry today and it made a very quiet clicking sound, not loud like it used to be. And it just wouldn't start. I put a screwdriver on the solenoid posts and it would just crank not completely start up.

I noticed that the cranking was significantly slower then how it used to be which is why it wouldn't start.

Charged battery, checked for compression, checked for spark, and primed carb, everything was in check... but it just wouldn't completely start.

I kept trying and trying to start it up and it eventually started one time after like 25 tries.... then it never started again...

when the spark plugs are off it cranks the same speed it used it to when it ran... but once the plugs are on its very slow.

The speed of the cranking is sometimes super slow, but sometimes fast, still not fast enough to completely finish. What could this be???

probably a combination of a bad/corroded starter solenoid and dirty power cable connections. try replacing or thoroughly cleaning the solenoid contacts/posts and completely clean all power cable connections (starter, battery, ground, ect).

Probably your starter going bad. I had this same thing happen on a kawi 650 TS.

Do what user_error suggested and if that doesnt help, look out for a new starter. I bought mine new on amazon for about $60.

Those old starters get crusty inside and start to fail over time.

In all my years of this junk, I've never seen a kawi solenoid that clicked and wasn't good. Yamaha is a totally different story! bypass the entire system by running a 12volt jumper directly to the starter. it should crank non stop every time. if it doesn't, its the starter, which i'm pretty sure it is. intermittent problem means dead spot on the starter armature. I've had the red wire snap at the starter post and not know it and it'll always click and never crank. loose connection at the starter or Ebox can do it too but I doubt that's your problem. bad starter like jksj thinks. buy a used cherry OEM starter off ebay unless you plan on buying another AM new starter in a year OR LESS!

Probably just the solenoid. You can measure the voltage at the starter while trying to start it. While just clicking I bet there's nothing. While cranking slowly I'm betting you'll see less than 12v. Sometimes a failing solenoid will still manage to pass SOME voltage.
