Dave sent out a 701 Industries B1 Suspension Steering for me to try out, it is definitely one of his best products to date!
Upgrades over the regular steering include:
- Beefed up steering stop on steering arm
- Beefed up steering stops on main shaft
- Beefed up quick steer arm, with 5 hole adjustments (down from 7)
- Urethane top collar with internal spring for shock absorption
- Internal shock strut for suspension dampening
- Sealed shaft (open shaft sold with regular QS)
- 31.8mm standard head (my original setup came with 28.5 I believe, RRP size)
I have run suspension systems in the past, only to find a small amount of travel with each bump, often greeted by the stem "bottoming out" on itself which only delayed the jarring of the bars, rather than dampen it like a true suspension system.
The 701 suspension system feels completely different, Dave has installed a stiff spring accompanied by an internal shock that allows the bars to move with a dampened effect.
On smaller bumps the bars have a nice soft feeling, all of the jarring from the hull is eliminated, you hear the hull hit, but you dont feel it in the bars. On large jumps, you can feel the steering move through its full travel length, where the shock dampens the movement on both the down and the up stroke. I rode a stock hull for a few minutes I can definitely say that the steering from 701 feels WAY better than stock! My wrists started to complain almost immediately when I was on the stock steering, proving that the 701 setup was absorbing impacts while riding.
I ran this over the weekend at Daytona in less than desirable conditions and I am very happy with what Dave has come up with, I will post up after I have some more time on the steering system to keep you posted on the longevity of the setup. If it is anything like the regular quick steer, I feel that I will not be disappointed.
