650/X-2 88 650sx Primer Kit Install Help

Can anyone give me instructions for the install of a primer kit on an 88 650sx with a stock carb. Want to make sure I know what Im getting myself into so I have all the materials and tools at the ready. Thanks.

Just put a T in the reserve fuel line that goes into the "in" for the primer, then I tapped a hole for a nipple in the top part of the carb right below the air filter where the hose from the "out" went so it squirted below the filter into the carb. This also made sure if I messed up it was just the top part of the carb, not the lower more important section.

The short version of the above assuming you know what you are doing...
...Install primer nipple on carb
...Cut reserve line and put in the provided T
...Run included hose line from T to primer pump
...Run included hose line from primer pump to carb
...Zip tie all hoses

You carb needs a primer fitting. It should be included in the kit. It is the small nipple that is included. I have never put one on a carb so I cannot give you the exact steps. I do know that one way is to remove the stock choke butterfly and use the hole left behind for the nipple, and the other way is to leave the stock choke alone and tap the carb somewhere to add the fitting. My carb had the fitting, so again, I cannot give anything more specific as to how to install it.

Once the fitting in on the carb, you do the following...
Find a location for the primer pump. Where you install it is your decision. The most common place is to use the hole left over from the stock choke cable in the front of the tray. Now that you have decided where the pump is going to go, pick a place in the reserve line for the brass T included in the kit. It does not matter where you put the T, but the shorter your primer lines are, the less fuel you need to pump into the primer system before it actually puts fuel into the carb. Next, figure out which nipple on the primer pump is in, and which is out. You can do this simply by putting your finger over the nipple. If you have the pull/pump kind, it should pull air when you pull on it, and push air when you push on it. If you have the ball style, then it should pull air when you press the ball and push air when you release the ball. If in doubt, just hook it up and if it doesn't push fuel it's backwards, so switch them. Now that you know how it all works and goes together, repeat everything list above to make sure you are 100% sure you have a plan. Once you are sure, cut your reserve line, install the T fitting (the fuel line stays straight, the 90 degree angle is left out for the primer pump). Attach the included smaller fuel line to the base of the T, run it through the nut that holds the pump on, through the hole in the hull for the pump and attach it to the primer pump (don't be lazy, run your primer lines nicely around the outter edge of the engine compartment) then cut off the excess. Next connect the fuel line to the out on the primer pump, through the hull, through the nut, (run it nicely like you did the 1st line) and attach it to the new nipple on the carb. Make sure all connections are zip-tied in place. The fuel selector MUST be set to "on" (NOT reserve) and test your pump. If it does not work, switch the hoses on the pump opposite that you have them (after making sure you do not have the fuel selector on reserve. You must have a fuel selector and it must be set to on).

Oh, btw, if you have the stock 28mm carb, you should replace it with a stock 38mm carb or an aftermarket 42mm keihen or 44mm mikuni. The 28mm carb is too small. You can still install your primer, but make sure you do not lose the carb primer fitting when you ditch the carb for an upgrade.

Do you know where I could get the proper intake to fit the 44 mikuni? My friend is going to sell me a cheap 44 but I am hoping to not spend an arm and a leg finding the corresponding intake...

Sorry to reviving an old thread on a simple subject, but I am trying to install my first primer kit and was wondering if someone could answer a quick question for me.
Is there a way to remove the choke rod without cutting it out? i was trying to install this without removing the carb. Is that possible?
Thanks

Use a dremmel to cut the ping off the back of the screw, then remove the screw. Shaft should slide out, but might take some force.

Looks like you might have cut the screw so you want be able to remove it. Just grind it down until it's flush with the shaft.
