94 kawasaki SC 650 help

I have this problem with my ski. Its a Sport cruiser but I figured most of the motors are similiar if the not the same to each other, ok here is my question. When I try starting my engine it will just crank over and crank over, I poured a little fuel in the carb then it starts up then dies, So I poured more into the carb and try again this time when it started I reved the engine and it seemed to be going good for a few seconds then the rpm gets really high. I took my hand off the throttle and it continues to rev higher and higher on its own then all of a sudden dies on its own or I turn it off. then it wont start on its own again what could this mean? I know it wasnt the throttle sticking. bad carb? thank you

Hmmmmmm I am going to go out on a limb here and say your needle and seat on your carb is stuck closed not letting in any fuel. You are adding fuel pouring it down the carb when that runs out it runs lean and revs up,at any rate pull the carb, unstick the needle and clean the filter screen while you are at it.Ps its a pretty big limb I am standing on here.

Carb or fuel pump for sure, doe it have a seperate fuel pump? Take the return line loose from the carb then blow pressure into it,fuel should then come out of the fitting that you took the hose loose from,if it does that means all the lines ,fuel valve and pickups are clear,it still dosen't tell you whether the fuel pump is working or not,but if you have fuel going to the carb and the needle is not stuck it pretty much means the fuel pump is not working by process of elimination.

Most the 650's with the 28mm carb can have a plugged low speed jet as well, I always install a clear fuel filter just before the carb.

loosen the fuel cap and blow through all fuel lines to ensure theyre clear.

when you blow through the line that feeds the fuel pump, from the tank, you should be hearing bubbling in the tank. if its clear, but you hear no bubbling in a semi full tank, you could have a damaged pickup tube.

the put them back, verifying that theyre on correctly.

put a clear filter before the carb and crank with your hand completely covering the carb, as a 100% choke. do this until you see fuel in the new filter.

then crank with your hand there in 1-2 second spurts. remove your hand after each try and see if theres any fuel in the carb throat.

crank the ski and see if it runs. if it starts to rev out again, either cup the carb, or open and close the throttle rapidly.

but what actually would cuase it to rev so high, it was sounding like it was reving as if I were holding the throttle all the way down. I do have a clear fuel filter and it seammed to be pumping to the filter fine. could the setting on the air mixture screw be all messed up? and does it matter if water was running through it during the tests if I only turn it on for no more than 10 seconds?

it can do that as the engine runs out of fuel the a/f ratio becomes very lean and the engine races.try not to induce this if you can as it is bad for the motor

ok, i think im just going to change all gaskets, hook up the water hose and see if that works, do you know how many turns the two screws should be.

i should get a new carb, the carb and fuel are together right and the carb rebuild kits come with fuel pump rebuild kit too?
