It will stain even in fresh water but salt water will accelerate it. You have to understand that the only thing between the bare metal and the harsh salt is a thin film of wax. That said, your pole has absolutely no protection on it at all. So the staining you are seeing is actually the preliminary stages of corrosion. You can try to clear coat it but because of the waxy surface, it may or may not stick. You can get a chrome powder coat as well but it's not real cheap.

Take it off the ski, polish it up nice nice one last time, strip it of all wax and contaminates and then clear coat the :):):):) out of it, they do it to 3pc wheel lips. why not your pole.

I have an AC polished pole on my SXR that pretty much does the same thing. I HAND polish it out with rubbing compound (It's a beotch!) and it shines like brand new chrome, but after even one ride is gets water spotted to death! No matter what I do its a high Maintanence pole but the best trick I've learned is right after I have polished it is to coat it throughly with RainX. The RainX repels the water and slows the corrosion. After EVERY ride I must wipe the pole down with a rag and reapply RainX so the water spots don't return. As long as I keep up the wipedown and Rainx, I've had the pole remain pretty shiny for up to six months at a time before I really need to hit it hard with the rubbing compound and even then its not that bad to bring it back to new.
