A Couple More 66e Questions

I'm pretty sure I am about to pick up a new 66e crate motor, but it doesn't come with anything, but the shortblock so I've got a few questions...

1. What carbs are everyone running with the 66e and how do they run?

2. What reeds/reed cages are everyone running in their 66e?

3. Is it possible to find a used total loss system for the 66e and if so which system will work? Does anyone know what a new system would cost(not that it's in the budget)?

Thanks:biggthumpup:

Good luck on that! Used TL systems go quickly and new ones are now 1300 plus retail. The only difference from the 701 is the trigger plate and flywheel.

i think you can run a gp1200r flywheel and redrill a gpr pickup plate if youre searching for used parts. The 701 msd brains, coils, wiring, is the same.

I'm still running oem reeds in mine. I use the new WDK billet manifold and full specs 49 carbs.

I have two ski's running the 66e motor. One with TL and one with out. I could not find a used TL for a 66e till after I bought a new one. They are vary rare and hard to find. I don't think to many people bought them for the 800's before they started racing the tripple cylinders ski's. I bought mine from Jet Ski Solutions for $970.00 all wired by John and on the a mounting plate. Everything was complete. They retail for almost $1400.00 everywhere else. http://www.x-h2o.com/threads/11284
Here is the link to some pic's of the system. TL has is falts also, if you ride in salt water these systems don't work well with salt. Also the battery needs to be charged every 4 hours or so. You run the risk of breaking down while you still want to ride. You have to have a very soild battery and take care of it. There is just more hassle with a TL. Wires come loose and corrode and can make for a very long day. If you wait, the electrical systems come up for sale on Ebay from time to time. I bought one this past fall and paid less than $100.00 for one. Also you can call around to some of PWC salvage places and ask if they have one for sale. I think more items will start to be posted on Ebay after Christmas. Also this platform is more popular and the prices are starting to go up on the used stuff.

The stock motor I have a pair of 48 Novi and the 927 I have a pair of 49 Full specktrum carbs. These motors like the gas and somethings all the gas you can throw at them. I had tried 46 carbs and switched to 48 because I got a very good deal on them. If you look at the video that Jeff posted with the stock 66e motor, it is running the stock carbs and powervales and the guy is doing barrel rolls just fine. So if money is tight just go all stock and upgrade as money permits.
I am using the stock reeds on one and carbon tec reeds on the other. I am not an expert but talking to Jeff he thinks the stock reeds work just fine. Save your money and buy your other parts first before worring about reeds. But you if have a worn out set, it makes it real hard to tune and you spend a lot of time tunning a motor that can't be tuned. I know, this is what happened to me last summer.
I hope this helps.

Appreciate all the great info Dale. So you really got a brand new complete Total Loss system all wired up for $970? That's incredible. I may have to look into that.

The engine I'm considering buying is a brand new stock OEM crate motor and doesn't come with intake, carbs, electrics, pipe, etc. so I need to buy all those parts anyways.

Are you running the WD pipes on both ski's?

Appreciate all the great info Dale. So you really

Are you running the WD pipes on both ski's?

Yes, on both of them. He has made some real good inprovements over the early ones. He is always improveing his parts and the way he builds things. He also replaced the first pipe with a new and improved one for free. I was really happy with that. So he has his falts, but if you give him time to make things right he will. You have to give him plenty of lead time, will that is what I have found out. Might be different for you.

absolutely!

when he first introduced the diablo hood awhile back...I broke the nosepiece on teh first ride..

Jeff was there (at daytona), saw it...and told me on the spot

"yup, gotta change that part of the design"

a month later I saw another one of them and he had already fixed the problem! :burnout:

I run 48 Novi's with mine. When it came to the MSD I hated setting up the pickups on the flywheel cover. Its a tedious process, much more of a pain than a 701.

All the guys I ride with run TL. They have very few problems with them. When you hear about some of the issues on this board you have to ask are the self imposed? Does the guy building the setup really know what he's doing. If your building a race boat then thats what it is. You'll have to stay on top of it because thats what it is. The WD pipe is made for freeriding. There is a big difference between freeride and race engines. All these posts of hp for the freeride engines are misleading. Sure a freeride engine may give great 0-3 boat lengths but then there is mid and top.
