Advent wiring

Living the dream!
Hi just recieved my advent cdi and it says in the instructions not to connect the brown/white wire in the electric box. Isn't this for the charging ? ?
Any ideas ?

Cheers

Not in the sense of 12vdc. It's for charging the capacitor in the CDI (in the stock 62t CDI). The 2 Green wires charge the battery (after being regulated thru the CDI).

Don't forget to carefully check your timing.

Yeah, just leave the brown/white unconnected, well, you'll have nothing to connect it to anyway.

Let us know how the CDI goes. I'm especially intrested in seeing if it starts properly, or kicks back on the starter because it's too advanced.

Advents are plug-n-play wiring, I don't use the pink and one extra black (cap the pink off/overheat limiter) Cap off the brown w/white from the stator (not used to plug in the Advent CDI/ the Advent uses 12v for power not generated stator power).
All the other wires are direct color plug in (except if you wire in the gray loom lead wires to run a water injection solenoid).
P.S. Make sure you use NGK 5k ohm resister plug caps on the coil leads!

That seems like what mine is doing. But I had a slight bit of advance at the stator also. I just set it back even with the timing mark and see if it helps.
What curve are you running?

I ran the #6 curve mostly, it's quite good. As for the others, I had the kick back no matter what curve I was running. A timing light confirmed that it was starting with maximum advance, so it was struggling.

Did you do anything to help it start easier?

Apparently there are two different circuits in that CDI. One for starting and the other for running. There is a problem that Advent has yet to overcome due to the shape of the pulse that is received during cranking. This leads to the advance problem during cranking. If you simply retard the position of your stator relative to the timing mark, then you lose your advance during normal operation.

The only real solution I've found is a good reliatble strong battery. This is why I was curious to see how many people were successfully running the light Walmart batteries with Advents.

Yeah, there really is no solution to the problem that is still there. I did get one Advent recently that worked perfectly for about 10 minutes before I had no spark, and then back to the same old problems.

Don't get me wrong, they are a great ignition, but I need something that I know is going to start when I'm on the line. I was sick of throwing my hand in the air at least once per moto because of the hard starting.

If Advent actually sorted out this problem, they would be set. I love the idea of the Advent, they just need to fix it. Until I'm actually able to test new working cdi's from Advent, I'd have to advise against them if you like an easy starting engine.

Ok guys Advent fitted and it rocks, hits hard and is easy to start. BUT i have one problem, it seems like its hitting the limiter all the time. I set the limit to 7900rpm and have checked it twice since. I have also changed plugs and cut back the wires to eliminate them.
The only other thing changed at the same time as fitting the Advent was the carb jetting (pop off) but it seems to be running nice and clean ?
Any suggestions as to look at next ?

Cheers James
