Anybody that lives, has lived or is otherwise familiar with Alabama im looking for sone info. Mainly the northern part or even north east. What to know about living there. Florida is just not the place i want to retire, im thinking about 5+acres, doing some garden and livestock. Chickens for sure and see what happens from there. Rabbits, pigs? No idea. Looking to be close to hospital and shopping but dont want to be seeing people much. Small local community is more the speed.

What places to go see and what places to stay away from.

Georgia is nice also but seems like everybody is already flooding that state. Tennessee seems a little too mountainous for my tastes but ive not really seem much of it than driving thru it and lookout mountain/ruby falls. Carolinas? Don't want to be on the coast. Done with hurricanes.

Im getting old, im not much for dealing with crap. Just want to tinker and roam around.

Thanks for any advice.

I have lived here all my life , in the southern part though , Greenville is nice but there is absolutely nothing going on down here , I lived in Montgomery for about ten years , I suggest you stay far , far away from there , too much going on and way too much crime and almost daily shootings taking place , anyone with any sense moved from Montgomery a long time ago , Prattville and Elmore county is where most of them moved to , Prattville is pretty nice and big enough to get what you need but not overly busy..

Wetumpka is in Elmore county , as is Millbrook and Tallassee , all of those are kind of small towny but big enough to have what you need and they are really nice .

Birmingham area is probably not much better if any than Montgomery .

Huntsville I don't know much about but the space center is there and I hear it's very busy as well.

I lived in Elmore county for about 15 years and that is where my shop is on the North end of Elmore county , I absolutely loved it there , I have spent a lot of time in Andalusia which is where Gantt lake is , that area is kinda nice also spent a lot of time in and in Alexander city which is on Lake Martin , Alex City is absolutely stunning , has a great hospital and I would move up there in a minute if I had the chance.

BK can fill you in on the Tuscaloosa area and maybe some others will chime in.

Thank you very much. I think we spotted a house in millbrook(name seems familiar). Thats what started the question. Ill def check out those areas.

I only excluded south because i figure it was gonna be like south georgia/ north Florida- flat. Bleh. Rolling hills with mountain views is prob where im aiming.

Millbrook is a stones throw away from Prattville and from what I have seen is pretty nice, Pratville is weird part of it is in Elmore county and part of it is in Autauga county ,, still a nice place though.

Tuscaloosa is a great area. You can live out in the county and still be 20 minutes from town... heck. You can get just about anywhere in 15 minutes. We have a very clean lake here. Honestly it's a great town. Not huge, traffic is not terrible unless it's a ball game weekend. Even then not terrible.

One thing I will say about anything in Elmore county is that it is well funded , we have a casino in Wetumpka , I am not saying that is good or bad thing , what I am saying is the roads and anything county owned is well maintained not like Butler county -Greenville where I live , the roads look like something out of a third world country here .

Millbrook is close to the Alabama river and not too far away from Lake Jordan , Lake Martin. and you have Lay lake right up the interstate a piece in Clanton .

Basically 10 minutes will get you in the Alabama river 15 minutes will get you in the Coosa river in downtown Wetumpka , 30 minutes will get you in Lake Jordan or Lake Martin.

That is one of the things I loved about Eclectic , it's really small but in 15 minutes you can be at either lake or in the Coosa river , it makes water testing not such a chore , in Greenville it's 45 minutes one way to get to Gantt lake or Point A both of which are really small.

The Coosa river and the Tallapoosa river come together right below Wetumpka to form the Alabama river and that will take you all the way to Mobile if you want , Lake Jordan was formed by damning up the Coosa river and it's a decent size lake,, Lake Martin was formed by damning up the Tallapoosa river and it is huge , it's in three counties , Elmore, Coosa and Tallapoosa with over 800 miles of shoreline , you can ride all day and never see all of it .
