Alright I admit - 61X cylinders need girdle kits

For the past 1-2 years I have always claimed that a 61X cylinder with a non-head mounted pipe didn't necessarily need a girdle kit.

Phill's X cylinder cracked in two this weekend. He's ran it at 84mm bore, 170psi pro-tec head, and B-pipe for about a year now.

At this weekend surf ride, he had to get towed back in. Upon opening the hood, we found the carb nuts missing (and carb hopping around loose on the studs) and the cylinder cracked.
Instant carnage.

So there you have it. Run a girdled head.

Phil was not the only one with a busted ski (although he did a better job at it than the rest of us), of the four ski's we took there not one was running on the way home and Suva took two skis and only one of his ran, although I was impressed with his impromptu head gasket . At one point on Sat there were 14 skis on the beach and nine busted ones.

Absolutely the coolest carnage I have seen in person. Carb off the manifold, and 2-piece cylinder.

Beats me. I would guess that somewhat contributed to the cracking.

Carb nuts were off, too.

I blame the assembler. (NOT ME)
