My understanding is that Comp Vests are designed for wake boarding competitions where the emergency support staff is ready on-hand. They offer the athletes more flexibility so that they can pull off complicated tricks. However, much like a SJ is designed for "closed course racing," people tend to ignore their stated purpose and use them in whatever way they want.

It is very sad to read about people drowning because they weren't wearing proper safety gear.

We were given one, and I'm probably just ongoing to throw it out. Way too dangerous, and nobody in my family is a competitive wake boarder.

Ya, a comp vest(key words) will float you, it just doesn't keep your head back, so your face first in the water. A Coast Guard approved PFD is supposed to keep your head tilted back(for the most part).
I have one and have tested it and it floats me enough to keep buoyant, but thats about it. I dont understand why he never resurfaced. Wonder what vest he was wearing to not have any flotation at all?? hmmm sounds fishy to me. Maybe he filled his lungs with water and sank with the vest???

I dont use mine anymore, and I only wore it maybe 10 times and have had it for 7 years... I just bought it for its cool looks and it was a clearance sale item on a $140 vest @ $40. But, yeah for sure, you blow your air out, you sink even lower(obviously). So more than likely this guys lungs filled with water and he sank with a comp vest on?? Either way so sad.
